If you’re a regular reader you may well be a little bored of me saying I want to go back to Italy! Just go ahead and book it you might be saying!
Hubby keeps asking me what I’d like for my wedding anniversary (6 years this year) it is supposed to be sugar but I’m trying to think of a way to link Sardinia and Sugar – I am failing. If you can think of anything please let me know. Anyway I digress. Why do I want to go…
1. Lonely Planet’s Travel with Children says it has “fascinating history, captivating towns and spectacular beaches”. To be honest I don’t need much more than that!
2. There is a Mark Warner resort there Perdepera Beach Resort. We are Mark Warner Family Ambassadors this year and having tried out their Ski Holiday earlier this year and currently being in Turkey at Sea Garden – I think it is only right we try out the Italian one too! My kids loved the childcare and the family atmosphere in the ski resort so I know it would work for them.
3. My kids love pizza and pasta more than anything in the world which means I wouldn’t have to fight with them about what they would eat!
4. I can easily fly from the North West to Naples and then get the ferry across to Sardinia. Arriving to an island by ferry and getting a real sense of the place can be incredibly beautiful. To break up the journey from the UK we could stay in Naples overnight, just to sample their ice cream!
5. Sardinian festivals are legendary and an amazing way to experience the best of a place with the kids.
6. There are 4 million sheep (now I’m not sure this is a reason to go exactly but I did think it was interesting!).
7. I want to visit Cantine Surrau which takes a holistic approach to winemaking. The standard tasting (€20) gets you three different wines served with pane carasau (Sardinian flatbread), cheese, salumi and olives, while the €35 tasting consists of five wines, local cheese, salami, bottarga (mullet roe) and Sardinian sweets. I would have to go for the latter one, wouldn’t you! I know it isn’t exactly a reason to take the kids, but happy Mum equals happy kids…. (sort of).
8. The island has grottoes and caves, with prehistoric names like tombe dei giganti (giant’s tombs) and Hobbit-like domus de janas (‘fairy house’ chamber tombs). Perfect for the kids to explore.
9. Gently shelving beaches with powder white sand to the north west and south particularly make it fun for kids on the beach.
10. It’s Italy – they love children, embrace them and welcome them rather than suffer them. Consequently it makes it a wonderful experience for all the family.
Oh this sounds gorgeous – I haven’t been to Italy for ages and never really considered Sardinia but I think I’m missing a trick…
