British Lawnmower Museum
Say what? A museum dedicated to lawnmowers? Yes indeed, this is one of the places to see in Southport when you’re a kid or adult that’s into machinery.
Whatever you might think, TripAdvisor reviews confirm that children – on the whole – love this place. Even though they may not care that it’s a leading world authority in vintage and antique garden machines.
Apparently the inventor of the lawnmower had to try out his creation by night, as everyone thought him quite mad at the time (around 1830). Now, you can see all the biggest and best lawnmowers here, including one that once belonged to Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Southport Bijou Cinema
Run by volunteers, Southport’s little local cinema is not-for-profit and specialises in showing films not normally seen at multiplexes.
Whether there are currently things on in Southport you really want to see or not, it’s really worth a visit anyway to witness the traditional movie theatre experience, complete with moving curtains, a rake auditorium, surround sound and a top spec projector.

Shopping in Southport
When the weather’s gloomy and the kids’ faces are equally downcast, it’s surprising how much a little retail therapy can lift the spirits. Especially if you’re the parent of a teen or tween.
Lord Street is the main thoroughfare, and all manner of retail outlets can be found along its length. Plenty of trees and wrought-iron detailing make it easy on the eye too.
Wesley Street is adorned with colourful bunting and offers a range of more quirky, one-off shops, or you could head to modern Central 12 retail park near the town centre.
The Atkinson
Located on Lord Street in the heart of Southport, The Atkinson is a dynamic centre of all things arty, cultural, musical, literary, historical and theatrical.
It’s a top pick among places to visit around Southport on a rainy day, as there is plenty to see and do under cover. With a regular programme of events, your visit may even coincide with Kidsfest or a music festival.
There are dedicated exhibitions centre on subjects as diverse as the local coastline and Egyptology, and a cafe and library can also be found on site.
Ocean Plaza

Ideas for days out near Southport include the cities of Manchester, Liverpool and Chester, all of which have undercover attractions of their own to keep the kids busy.
You can travel directly into Liverpool, for instance, via the Northern Line that begins and ends in Southport. Other interesting stops along this route include Formby, Crosby and Waterloo, all of which are good if you fancy a wet walk along the sandy shore.
Splashworld
