Over the past 20 years major cruise lines have gone to great lengths to ensure their ships offer plenty of fun and excitement for all ages – even the youngest members of the family – but it’s not all about the ship it’s about what you can see whilst you’re cruising too.

Here we run through a few things to do and see on a Mediterranean Cruise which will help you identify the perfect cruise on the Mediterranean for you and your family.

Enjoy the Food

If it’s all about the food for you, then on a Cruise, particularly a French Cruise, you will simply love the food on offer.

An essential element of French culture, gastronomy is naturally high on the agenda aboard PONANT ships. Fresh products, carefully selected ingredients, exquisite dishes. Throughout your cruise, you will appreciate outstanding cuisine prepared by talented chefs sharing their passion for French culinary heritage.

In a setting worthy of the finest restaurants (where better than looking out to sea), you will discover dishes inspired by the ports of call you visit.

Most cruises also cater really well for kids and a quiet word in your servers ear will see a variety of options for children on offer.

Enjoy Wellbeing

Most cruise ships have an onboard spa. Equipped with massage booths, hammam, a hair salon and fitness room that have panoramic ocean views, what could be better than getting your running fix with a view of the glistening Mediterranean sea.

Kids Club

Check with your booking team that the ship and itinerary you are considering has a kids club running, but these can be the perfect antidote for kids after a day exploring, or simply to have a day off exploring whilst you soak up the sights of the Mediterranean.

Enjoy evenings together

Many major cruise lines offer babysitting and childcare services. However, it is worth checking how comprehensive these services are. A number of cruise lines offer on-board evening babysitting services and in-cabin services – so a nanny will come to your cabin and care for baby whilst you can go and enjoy an evening to yourselves.

Pool & Sun Deck

The spacious, comfortable outdoor areas of cruise ships offer superb ocean panoramas. Many often have large and spacious sunbathing areas with heated pools, and many with separate kids pools too.

Enjoy the Sunset

The demand for private balconies has seen a huge shift in cruise ship design, with more cabins than ever perched over the sea. Balcony rooms give guests the chance to enjoy unspoiled private views over the beautiful seascape – but can offer even more for parents of babies and young children.

Putting baby down for a nap no longer means you have to diligently wait inside the cabin, watching TV and re-reading the one book you brought with you. With a balcony cabin, you can keep one eye on baby sleeping in the cabin whilst you enjoy the sea breeze through your hair, watching the world pass you by.

Explore Greece

On the itinerary Treasures of the Peloponnese with Ponant you can explore historic and cultural sites that are among the most celebrated in Greece. You depart and end in Athens and during your 8 day cruise can explore Sifnos in the Cyclades, Nafplion, giving you an opportunity to visit the superb Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gythio, the main port of ancient Sparta where you will discover the Byzantine city of Mystras, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When the ship calls at Pylos, you will explore the ruins of the Palace of Nestor, one of the heroes of the Trojan War, and of course the wonderful archaeological site of Delphi clinging to the slopes of Mount Parnassus, which you will reach from Itea.

Finally you will cross the Corinth Canal, thus sailing through the Peloponnese isthmus to arrive back into Athens.

All that exploration of Greece that would not be possible from a land based holiday.
