If you are wanting to reconnect with nature, your family and your sense of adventure then a stay at Skye Yurts on the Isle of Skye couldn’t be more perfect.

Skye Yurts is a family run business birthed out of a dream. Emma and Jon had a wonderful tipi holiday when their children were young and decided that they wanted to create a similar experience for others.

The couple provide wonderfully warm hospitality in their yurts and annexe, which is located on the land next to their family home in Sleat in South Skye. They keep a menagerie of hens, cats and a dog (not to mention an abundance of birds in the trees, and even some lovely bats at twilight!) which the children were very taken with.

Emma and Jon have thought of everything, and everything from the well-equipped kitchen, to the board games in the snug, to the twinkly solar-powered fairy lights in the yurts; shows how much they value comfort, hospitality and eco-consciousness.

We stayed in the water yurt (there’s a water, fire and earth themed yurt) and we were surprised at how spacious it was. The water yurt can accommodate up to 5 people and we all fit in very comfortably. There was a double bed, double futon and single futon in our room, and there was still plenty of space for some very well thought out furniture, including hanging space, a shoe rack, bed side tables and a chest of drawers.

We loved how bright the yurt was during the day (with a skylight on the top of it), and how cosy it was at night. On an evening we loved lighting the wood burning stove, the candles and the incense sticks and hunkering down. The complete lack of mobile signal or internet connection meant that we really switched off and enjoyed our evenings reading our books and listening to the sound of our sleeping children. Absolute bliss!

A big family get together

Skye Yurts would be the perfect location for a big extended family get together (now that this travel and mixing is allowed again). You could book out the whole site for a truly special holiday.

Facilities

There are shared toilet facilities and mains electricity supplied shower facilities – these are being cleaned and checked twice daily in line with government advice.

The kitchen facilities are very well equipped. The large fridge, dishwasher and cafetiere got our seal of approval! There is also a sheltered eating area with boardgames, books and some outdoor games are stored too. The first aid kit is kept up high here, and I noticed a little bottle of calpol next to it – a lovely, thoughtful touch, which shows just how accommodating they are even to their littlest guests.

One of my favourite things was seeing the little notes that Emma would write on the blackboards for us – we had lots of privacy while we were on our hols, but our hosts genuinely took a interest in us too, and would leave us a lovely message at the beginning or end of the day. They asked us if we managed to find the dinosaur footprints and when we replied “yes” on the black board we were tickled pink with the response the next day, which read “very cool!”

  1. Oh, this sounds perfect! We’ve been thinking of going somewhere over the summer but a lot of places are prohihitively expensive for four adults with no children….. I’ll definitely be looking them up
