As a busy GP and mum of three boys, I was hoping for a family friendly, seaside holiday where I would also get a break from the cooking, washing etc! Enter Bedruthan Steps.
Step beyond the slightly shabby exterior, and enter a contemporary, modern world that caters for children and adults alike. Bedruthan Steps is on the north coast of Cornwall, a few miles from Padstow. It markets itself as a boutique, child friendly hotel, and it delivers. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel at home. Welcomed by a host of young, friendly, professional staff, we dumped our suitcases in our bright and spacious room and began exploring.
The hotel boasts a great outdoor play area which the kids made a beeline for. With a pirate ship, a wendy house and a zip wire, it caters for all ages. There’s also a football pitch and some toy diggers to play on, and a playroom with a pool table, table hockey and a TV.
The views are spectacular, and the beach is a short walk down the path. There are steps down to the beach so our friend with her buggy struggled, but made it with some help. We hired body boards from the Surf Shack next to the football pitch to ride some waves, and spent hours on the beautiful, clean, golden sandy beaches in the area.
There is also a fab indoor soft play area for wet days. The kids club is costly (and we chose not to as it’s not cheap to stay at Bedruthan anyway!), but there is a free session for two hours in an afternoon.
With both indoor and outdoor pools, there are plenty of activities at the hotel, but the surrounding area is also beautiful and needs to be explored – Tintagel, Padstow, Watergate Bay.
The food at the hotel was outstanding! There’s a kids tea at 5, but we all ate together a bit later. The food is all fresh and locally sourced, and our three course evening meal rivalled that of any top restaurant!
I would certainly recommend Bedruthan Steps to any family looking for something a little more special. The kids had a ball, and happy kids make happy parents… (Oh, and did I mention they have a spa..!)
