Today we went to celebrate Father’s Day at The Glegg Arms in Heswall our local Beefeater Grill. I have very fond memories of eating at a Beefeater Grill, as we always went as children ourselves. I remember their large ice cream sundaes particularly and having my own menu. It’s funny what’s important to you as a child isn’t it.

For some reason I haven’t ever taken the kids before, but having visited today, and now I know kid’s eat free every Saturday between 12-5pm we will definitely go back.

We notionally went because it was Father’s Day and they were offering a free steak to Dads after 5pm. We actually went because we had just got back from holiday and I didn’t want to cook. Whatever the reason, it was well worth a vist.

I called up when we arrived home at 3.30pm to book a table and I suggested 5pm. They kindly suggested we get they’re for 4.45pm as we would get served quicker as they had lots of tables in at 5pm. Good advice so off to a good start.

We arrived at 4.45pm and were seated in a booth quickly. Our waiter Guy introduced himself and made the kids feel very welcome. He gave them their own menus (glad some things don’t change) and I was really really impressed. There was so many choices, I can’t imagine there would be any kids who couldn’t find something they liked.

It was also visual so the kids could see what they wanted and it was very easy to swap in different side orders. It was also very good value. The Mr Men theme worked really well and the  kids excitedly chose what they wanted.

Sausage, mash and peas for one, mac and cheese with garlic bread for another, and chicken nuggets with chips and beans. They all went down really well. For me the nuggets looked less inviting then the others, but the kids loved them.

We had 10oz steak and chips (which was pretty good) and an amazing double bacon burger. Both on the menu for around £12, but the steak was only £3 due to the free steak/upgrade deal. We could have had unlimited chips with our meal and free re-fills of drinks too.

Possibly the most impressive thing is that we sat down at 4.45pm and by 5.15pm we were half way through our meals. When you’re dining with children, particularly tired ones who have just flown back from holiday, this sort of service is fantastic.

The staff couldn’t have done enough for us, and I could see everyone around us receiving the same treatment. It was quick, it was friendly, and they made the kids feel really welcome.

Combine that with colouring to keep them entertained, jelly and ice cream for pudding (Eaton Mess Sundae to share for us) and balloons to take home all for £42 it was a very good deal indeed.

Thanks to everyone at the Beefeater, and in particular Guy, who looked after us all very well indeed!
