When we were lucky enough to win a weekend at Bexwell Cottage in Wells-next-the-Sea, we added a couple of days at the seaside to our half term get away.

Apparently we have been to Wells-next-the-Sea before for lunch but I have no recollection of this, clearly due to child induced sleep deprivation.  It’s on the North Norfolk coast 15 miles to the east of the resort of Hunstanton, 20 miles to the west of Cromer, and 10 miles north of Fakenham

Charlotte and Julian the owners were incredibly helpful communicating with us during the run up to our break and meeting us on the Friday so we could park our car at the cottage while it was being prepared. They recommended several local places so on arrival we headed straight to The Albatross, for lunch. Lara was less than keen as has a fear of boats and all things sea related. She was also bothered by the lack of chicken and chips as this is her holiday staple diet. It is clearly a popular venue as there was a queue forming when we arrived just before the opening at 12. We were handed a wooden spoon and made our way below deck for a quirky Dutch themed treat. Thank fully Lara recovered from the trauma enough to enjoy a waffle.

We had a little wander and a drink and round of cards at The Edinburgh before settling into the spacious Bexwell Cottage, which is fully equipped with all you could need for a break by the sea. Loved getting some eggs and bread, butter and jam. Something we will start doing when we rent out our home. The owners were on hand for emergencies such as our inability to locate the WiFi code immediately to play Minecraft. Here is the boys video. The following day we clearly had to go on an epic hike as per Craig’s insistence to get 12 km of fresh air. It was a beautiful day and as we set off just after 8am we didn’t meet too many people. We were a little early for a cup of tea at The Lookout which was a new addition since our last visit. The woodland and beach was stunning and we all survived without too much complaining to be rewarded with hot chocolate and shortbread at the Beach Cafe.

By this point the car park was full and I’ve never seen so many people out for a walk so we were glad to have headed out early. Wells is a beautiful town with some fabulous little shops. All the character and charm of Southwold without being twee and smug.

For lunch we headed to The Nelson in Burnham Market. Though really it is a miracle we ever get to our destination as our in built sat nav has some kind of vendetta against us. We had a lovely meal and particularly enjoyed too many desserts.

All in all, a lovely end to our holiday. Wells-next-the-Sea has a lot more to offer us and we will be back!
