We recently visited Blackpool Tower Dungeons and I can’t believe I’ve never been before. We went as a family of four including myself and my wife plus our two kids Freddie and Daisy who are 9 and 5 years old respectively.

Cost of entry is £16.50 for an adult and £13.50 but you can book online for £14 and £11.50. You can also get a family ticket for £54 or £46 online so get yourself organised and save some money.

We decided to visit to get the kids in the mood for Halloween. On entry it was explained that the show was not really aimed at 5 year olds (more towards eight year old as a minimum) but Daisy is not easily scared so she was looking forward to it. The scene is set from the moment you walk in, everything is very dark and ‘dungeon-like’ and you get a real feel for what is to come. Once you have paid you wait a short while for the group to get together before the tour starts and the Jester makes an appearance to make you laugh (or cry depending on your nerves).

After a short and somewhat scary ride down to the Dungeons in the lift the tour then begins for real. You are led through eight different scenes which are all excellently designed and the live actors do an absolutely superb job of either scaring you or making you laugh but in most cases probably both. I don’t want to go into any detail about what each scene is about or what to expect because there are a number of unexpected surprises which get some fantastic reactions from those in attendance.

The finale is a ride called the drop. Unfortunately my kids were both too small to go on it but I went on and it was an excellent way to end the tour. After leaving the drop you are given the option of buying any pictures that had been taken and then you end up in the bar which is a great place to get a drink to settle those nerves.

The tour lasted about 45 minutes and we all had a great time. I would highly recommend it to anybody who has not yet been there. You can take advantage of some of the offers in place to take in some of the other Tower attractions which are great value. These can be found online and used up over the course a few days if you like.

All in all, the show was enjoyable, however if you’re travelling from far away you’ll probably want to make it part of an itinerary containing more than the 45 minute Dungeon trip alone, or you’ll be back on the motorway before you know it.
