I must make it clear that this is not a sponsored post nor is it an advice post. Advice on how to take Malarone and malaria tablets and whether you should take them and how many is for the preserve of doctors and pharmacists not blog posts or forums in my view.  What this is however this is a post about buying Malarone from Asda.

I feel compelled to write this post because over the last 3 years I have had amazing service from Asda when using their pharmacy service in store at their Arrowe Park branch.

The Asda malaria prevention service is a private medical service meaning you can purchase the tablets without a prescription. The Pharmacist will assess whether you or your family need malaria prevention tablets for the country you are travelling to and if it is appropriate, they will supply you with them.

Where to buy Malarone

Is Malarone from Asda the cheapest place to buy Malaria tablets?

In short yes – ASDA is the cheapest option to buy Malarone anti-malaria tablets from a pharmacist, I understand that they can be bought online for cheaper but I haven’t found an online pharmacist that I would buy them from that I trust and would recommend. That isn’t to say they don’t exist, just that I’ve not found one.

Asda Malarone Price 2019!

Currently (May 2019) ASDA sell Malarone tablets for £1.50 each (up from £1.25 in 2018)  but this is still cheaper than other UK pharmacy prices I’ve seen which have ranged from £1.95 to £2.39 per tablet! – Cheapest Malarone tablets 2019!

How many Malarone tablets will I need?

You should take Malarone at the same time each day with food or a milky drink. You will need to start taking the tablets daily, 1-2 days before visiting a malaria risk area, and keep taking the tablets every day for a week after you leave. You should discuss your timings and your location with your pharmacist.

Is Malarone the best anti-malarial?

Can ASDA prescribe Malarone to kids?

Yes they can now. Due to a recent change in the law pharmacists can now prescribe malaria tablets to kids meaning you don’t need private prescriptions from the GP or travel clinic.

Is Malarone available on the NHS?

No the NHS will provide malaria tablets to only a very small number of patients who have specific medical problems. Most people do not have these medical problems. The NHS will not pay for medicines for travel or recreation.

How to buy Malarone from ASDA

To buy Malarone from ASDA you will need to:

1. Find a local branch with an in-store pharmacy.
2. Book an appointment with the pharmacist at the store (for each person requiring tablets).
3. At the appointment complete a medical questionnaire (10-15 mins).
4. The pharmacist will assess your information and dispense the appropriate tablets.

At our local branch the pharmacy helpfully has a separate number so you can get straight through to them. I discussed our needs in advance with the pharmacy so they could order in additional tablets. We then arranged a time to go down with the pharmacy so that we knew there was a pharmacist available to see us. The pharmacist went through a questionnaire with us, discussed usage with us, and weighed the children so the correct dose could be given.

We were delighted with the service again, and whilst we were £142 lighter for our malarone tablets. When that could have been £300 plus the cost of private prescriptions at the doctors then it did feel like we’d got a good deal.
