Last night I went to see Cats at the Liverpool Empire on the opening night of a 6 night run in Liverpool. They’ve made some changes to the latest touring production of Cats, and up-dated some of the set pieces to give it a more contemporary feel.
Many of the cast, whose movements are quite simply incredible, move through the audience right from the very beginning of the show giving some people an up close view of the stunning costumes and make-up and some of the audience quite a shock.
Even if you haven’t been to see Cats, I’m sure most of you will have heard of it it is 35 years old after all! It is quite a feet to be still vibrant, fresh and electric, 35 years on. Adapted from TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, this tale is set on the night that the Jellicle Cats meet for the Jellicle Ball and demonstrate to us their music, dance and verse.
With an amazing musical score that includes the timeless Memory, spectacular set designs, stunning costumes and breathtaking choreography, CATS is a magical musical like no other.
The junkyard is a fantastic setting for the show. Cats jump off pirate ships and create a moving train. They appear from within the audience and disappear without trace. As they wait for their revered leader Old Deuteronomy, played each cat takes their turn in the spotlight.
The playful rap of Rum Tum Tugger was a favourite of mine, however so was the amazing voice of Grizabella, and the magical Mistoffelees sequence. Even when the main action is elsewhere the cats go about their business (as cats do) moving in ways that the human body shouldn’t be able to move!
Cats really is for everyone and you can see that with the review from one of regular writers who took her 6 year old daughter. You can’t not like this production. It is wonderful and highly recommended.
