Today I went into Liverpool on a very wet day, to take the kids for lunch at Cafe Rouge and try out their brand new children’s menu. I enlisted my friend Emma and her two boys to help us try out the menu and also thought it would be a good opportunity for us to have a glass of fizz to celebrate Emma’s birthday too.

Cafe Rouge isn’t somewhere I would have thought of taking 5 under 5’s and as we arrived at the restaurant for 12pm to find lots of couples and ‘grown up’s’ finishing a leisurely breakfast, I did worry that our presence was not going to be welcomed.  Cafe Rouge has however always been somewhere with a good atmosphere, it isn’t a quiet place, and so the noise the kids always make didn’t seem to impact on the restaurant at all which was a very pleasant surprise.

We sat down, and were immediately provided with crayons and menus to colour in.  I think to entertain the kids further they could consider stickers or small games like other restaurants with kids menus, but the crayons were definitely welcomed.

The menu had a really good variety of choices on it and most of ours went for chocolate or strawberry milk.  Our waitress Emma was lovely and thoughtfully asked if we wanted to order the kids food before ours so that we could get them eating.  It took around 15 minutes for the starter to arrive, possibly 20 minutes after we sat down.   It was £6.95 per child and that included 3 courses AND a drink which I think represents excellent value. I also thought it was very impressive that you could order a re-fill at only 75p extra.  Often children’s menus really add up because of the drinks.

When the starters arrived the bread was a big hit. It was really good. It didn’t however come with the advertised butter (kids wanted this to dip in)and some of the salad wasn’t the best quality. It didn’t effect our meal though as my three don’t eat salad so we just shuffled them around.  Emma’s youngest happily made himself a cucumber sandwich though with his!

 

The kids ordered pesto pasta, petit croque, bangers et mash and macaroni cheese, so between them we tried out quite a lot of options on the kids menu. It was all very good.

The dessert option was much more adventurous than most children’s menus. However there was the sensible and safe option of ice cream. If it isn’t on a kids menu there is always devastation, so I was pleased to see it there.  It was also absolutely gorgeous. Far too nice for the kids. The chocolate version had chocolate chips in too.  I had to taste just for the review purpose you understand.

All in all the meal came to £59.00 which I think for the seven of us was excellent. The children all really enjoyed their food and we were able to eat our lunch in relative calm too, which is always a win.  I would definitely consider visiting Cafe Rouge again with the kids and I’m glad we’ve managed to find another restaurant that will welcome us in.
