I am writing this post from the DFDS Ferry, as we return from our family holiday in France. I am writing this post from the ferry, while drinking a hot cup of tea. Oh yes, while it’s still hot! The kids (8, 5 and 1) are happily playing in the small soft play area, giving me time to chill and watch the world go by. These are parenting moments to savour! The soft play is small enough to see what they’re up to, but plenty to keep them occupied and the toddler can’t get out. Can you tell I’m a fan?
The journeys both ways have been very easy and stress-free. Check-in was quick and well organised, security checks were efficient and we didn’t have to wait long to board.
Before settling in the cafe for the boys to play, we waved to the white cliffs of Dover/beaches of Calais and explored the boat. I’ve been impressed by the choice of cafes and restaurants on board and the prices were no different to a city centre cafe (£2-3 for hot drinks, less than £2 for my chocolate muffin!). The duty-free shop is small but a good selection and the boys enjoyed spending the last of their Euros on a new travel game.
The ferry has been a lovely, relaxed way to spend the start and end of our trip to France. The crossing is short and the boys were so excited both ways about being on the boat. We had an amazing week in France; explored Paris, went to Disneyland and visited some of the important sites from World War 1. I will be writing more posts about those once I’m home.
In the meantime, I can see the white cliffs in the distance, and I’m wondering whether I have time for one more cup of tea before we get there….

Although we live in the Southwest we always travel to Dover to catch the ferry either with DFDS or P&O Ferries. We find that the trip is so much more relaxing than some of the longer crossings available and always considerably cheaper.
