On a recent holiday to Somerset, we decided we couldn’t end the week without a ‘beach day’. After a little local research (asking a local parent!) we found out that although Lyme Regis was an excellent beach to visit, we would be better off heading a little further away and exploring Charmouth Beach instead.
We arrived mid-morning and after a little searching, eventually found a car parking space. Most of the parking is relatively close to the beach itself which is a real bonus when you have two children on board!
Charmouth Beach has a river running out through it into the sea and although relatively fast flowing, we found it was quicker and easier to wade through the shallow bit rather than walk all the way round and over the bridge!
The beach itself is mainly rocky but does get more sandy the closer you get to the shore line or the further down the beach you go. Suitable footwear is a must! Our lot were armed with Crocs (between us I think our group of 17 had a pair in every size!) but there were a lot of people gingerly making their way across the rather sharp rocks!
The group dispersed into various beach type activities; kite flying, dam building and even swimming in the (rather chilly if you ask me!) sea. One group decided to walk up the rather inviting cliff path to see if they could make it to the top and also had a go at searching for fossils!
The beach itself has a visitor centre situated right on the promenade with a couple of handy shops selling beach essentials (sun hats, buckets etc.) along with a cafe. There is also a fantastic fossil shop where we really should have gone first as there was a wealth of advice about fossil hunting on the beach as well as hammer hire! This would have been a useful find as our lot were desperately trying to break open stones to look for fossils by slamming the them against each other!
Overall the beach was a great find for families of all ages and one I wish we had known about earlier in the holiday. We even tried to look for some local accommodation to extend our holiday nearer to the beach but I guess that will take a little more forward planning as everywhere was well and truly booked up!
