Our second family trip abroad this year took us to a sleepy village called Gharb in Gozo. Again an Airbnb and this time we managed not to mess up the airport transfer booking with Gozo Garage.

Previously we had a pretty bad experience with RyanAir but this time we flew with no issues from Stanstead. A quick bag drop, a breakfast in the Escape lounge and prompt boarding. All split up in single seats of course, but less of an issue now we have teenagers. Following an eventful flight with a vomiting Lara and a collapsed passenger we were transported by two Taxis and ferry to our final destination.

 Our accommodation in Gharb in Gozo was a few minutes walk from the central town square in Gharb and the annual Gharb Kite and Wind festival was just around the corner. Thankfully the local Lighthouse supermarket was well stocked with wine after a quick bite to eat at Ic Centru, which appeared to have variable opening times but did a great take away pizza. 

Although quiet, we found a couple of decent places to eat. A surprisingly great menu for a small cafe at the Ta’Dbiegi Crafts village with home cooked food and an amazing breakfast spread. And a short or very long walk to the Azure window with various cafes and well as a slightly more upmarket option.

Obviously we had to fit in a 15km walk the long way round to the Azure window past an objecting farmer who insisted we detour, adding 3km to our coastal route. Slightly anxious at the poachers constantly shooting at migrating birds, we escaped unscathed for a half way ten km beer before heading home for an afternoon of excellent Wifi by the pool. 

Victoria was a short bus journey at 2 euros each to explore the Citadel and the winding streets of the town. More food options and a great recommendation from the Brit at the supermarket Deli for a cafe called Mojo’s with fabulous salads and sweet chilli fries that dreams are made of.

 We fitted in a 11km Gozo Segway tour with Javier. This was way out of my comfort zone but thoroughly enjoyed by all and comes highly recommended! Javier was very patient with the anxious mum and very kind when she crashed into a hole on the off road adventure resulting in 2 scraped knees. 

As a treat we hired a chef recommended in the house manual. Claire Borg treated us to a homemade meal we will never forget! Bruschetta, rabbit stew and profiteroles I could eat for days. She has a fabulous instagram account as a food photographer to check out. 

Chris from Kayak Gozo took us on our final 3 hour adventure thru local caves and coastline stopping for a swim thru shimmering silver fish in a quiet bay. Even the teenagers were exhausted after that expedition!

Spoke too soon as our flight home was delayed by 5 hours due to the storms in the Uk. The lovely lounge staff at Malta airport let us stay in there for our wait, so we were well looked after. So home we went with no sleep and a full day at work for us both. Not the best ending, but another trip of memories for us to keep safe forever.
