Sometimes, just sometimes you really don’t know what to put the kids in when you’re heading out for a day. This happened to us recently as we spent a day in Wales exploring Castles with Visit Wales but the weather was expected to be bright and sunny in the morning, then cold, and then from time to time it was going to pour down!  So what to wear?

The kids have decided (this week anyway) that they have gone off jeans. They are apparently not comfortable and no-one wears them anymore – they are 6 and 7 god help me when they are 13 and 14! I thought that at this age they might still let me decide for them what they should wear.

So with a little persuasion from me, we settled on leggings from Joules, with long sleeved t-shirts, cardigan, gillet and coat also from Joules. They could then wear a combination of those or all, depending on how warm or cold it was.  Their choices of colours weren’t really perfectly chosen for the mud in the trenches at Bodelwyddan Castle but to be honest as everything washes I wasn’t too concerned – the rain would as it happened, help to wash it all off later in the day anyway.

We started the day at  St Winefred’s Well – one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the UK. We didn’t have time to bath in the holy waters so we might come back another time when the temperature will be slightly warmer

Next stop was Bodelwyddan Castle and Park near Rhyl where they had an adventure play area and a reproduction of Word War 1 Trench. The staff were all dressed in period costume and were really friendly and helpful.

On the way to Caernarfon we had to call in at the train station with the really long name whose name we all struggled to pronounce.   Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. My Dad can actually say it but we can’t.

From Llanfair PG  (Lets just call it that) we drove along the coast towards Caernarfon. The kids really enjoyed it as there were some really interesting interactive areas where you could find out about the castle’s history.

Finally we made our way to the Holyhead, and Southstack Lighthouse, having arrived in torrential rain and wind*, it was incredible that by the time we had had a cup of tea and made our way out towards the lighthouse, blue skies had arrived and we had an incredible view from the top!
