Visit the Beach

West Kirby Beach is like the beach that everyone forgot. Whilst on sunny days you will find people here, you won’t get anywhere near the number of people you perhaps should given its vicinity to Liverpool.

Walk out to Hilbre Island

This is a walk of around 4 miles (6.5km) over the sand from West Kirby to Hilbre Island and back.  It is only possible when the tide is out and you have to check the tide times carefully as they can come back in quickly!  You can’t do this with a buggy, so if you have babies or toddlers then you’ll need to carry them in sling or carrier when they get tired – and they will.

At Hilbre Island you can often see seals, it’s a great view to Wales and there is a now disused weather station. On a bright sunny day it’s a glorious walk.

Walk around the Marine Lake

People come from far and wide to walk around the marine lake, or to simply sit on the prom and eat fish and chips. Locals can be found running around it, walking, or simply watching those using it. It’s approximately 2km around.

Watersports on the Marine Lake

The marine lake isn’t just for walking around, it’s for sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding and more. There is a Council run sailing club at one end, and a private members only sailing club at the other.

Throughout the Summer the Council runs a variety of courses for adults and children alike. Check out their website for more information.

Cycling on the Wirral Way

The Wirral Way is a 12 mile path on the track of an old railway that goes from West Kirby to Hooton in mid-Wirral offering superb views over the Dee Estuary to Wales. It’s car free, mainly flat, and wide enough along the whole route for 2 possibly 3 people or bikes to pass easily. For those reasons it makes it very popular with long distance walkers, pop out for a stroll walkers, dog walkers, runners, horse riders and yes cyclists.

The Wirral Way makes a perfect morning out on bikes. It’s flat, it’s safe, and you don’t have to navigate cars.

Cycle along the promenade to New Brighton

Another fabulous and safe cycle route is from West Kirby to New Brighton. There is a small amount of road but mainly the 15km is on the prom. It can be windy but it’s a lovely view the whole way and perfectly safe for kids too.

Play in Ashton Park

The park is free and it’s huge. There is a play park, a duck pond, free tennis courts (which ideally should be booked in advance but often aren’t) cages for football or basketball, paths for skateboarding and bowling greens too. You can play or you can just take a picnic and soak up everyone elses activities.

Explore on Caldy Hill

Caldy Hill has some of the best views over West Kirby and the mouth of the Dee estuary to the Clwydian Hills. Owned by the National Trust (although its free to roam) there are countless paths and you can lose yourself in the woods. There are brilliant tress to climb and even in the rain its a fab place to explore. Just pack a hot chocolate in a thermos and some snacks and off you go.
