If you’re looking for some Glamping in Yorkshire why not try Humble Bee Farm.

My husband is not a fan of sleeping anywhere without 4 brick walls and good solid foundations.  So I decided to start him at the top of the tree, at the best glamping site I could find, in the hope that he’d see camping could be fun.  So I booked a surprise long weekend away.  Imagine the children’s delight and his horror as we pulled into somewhere with pictures of little tee-pees on the sign, called Humble Bee Farm (busman’s holiday, he’s a farmer!).  The thing is, Humble Bee Farm is no normal camping site, it is a thing of legend in Yorkshire (and indeed further afield).  It is considered the best of the best, in an area very well served by some wonderful glamping sites.  So did it live up to the reputation?  In a word, yes.

Accommodation at Humble Bee Farm

Admittedly we did stay in the top of the range accommodation, a delux wig wam (think little wooden chalet rather than tee-pee), with electricity, running water, an en-suite with power shower and toilet, oh, and a wood fuelled hot tub; I told you we were starting at the top of the tree!  Our little wigwam had double glazing and heating, an indoor kitchen and eating area, smart tv, a picnic table on an outside patio area with built in bbq and a small private grassed area.  Whilst we had lovely weather during our stay, I have no doubt that a winter visit would have been cosy too.  You take your own bedding (or rent from Humlble Bee Farm) so could of course easily adapt that for winter weather.  We also rented a fire pit, something most people tend to do, to toast marshmallows and enjoy the cooler evenings outside.

The hot tub really made our stay extra special though!  The children spent hours playing in it and it was a real luxury to relax in it in the evening with a glass of wine.  They take about 6 hours to get up to temperature so you either need to light them as soon as you arrive (2 pm check in) or pay the extra charge to have the site staff light it earlier for you.  Once it’s up to temperature you simply keep topping up the logs.

Everything was clean and in good order, and the kitchen area was well stocked.  I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the fridge which was big enough to hold everything for our 2 night stay.  It also had a little freezer compartment so ice cubes or ice blocks can be frozen.

As well as the fire pit mentioned above, there are lots of extras you can buy, including wifi, wood and bbq fuel.  I have seen some reviewer sites criticise these extra charges.  In all honesty these additional charges soon add up, however, they are clear at the time of booking so you know what you’re getting for your money.

The site also has yurts (with separate kitchen and eating are under an adjoining gazebo), bell tents (also with the adjoining kitchen and eating are) which looked super cosy with their little stoves) and space for your own tent or caravan.

The Site – Humble Bee Farm

The site itself is spotless.  The beautiful grounds are well maintained with beautiful planted areas, established trees and a pond for duck feeding.  The small track through the site is even and well lit.  There is a friendly goat wandering around (Blossom), a pig sty with a large friendly pig and a huge chicken coop where children delight in collecting eggs for their family each morning.  Something they are encouraged to do.

There is a large children’s play are at the wig wam end of the site.  This keeps children amused for endless hours, it is always being used by children of a wide variety of ages and parents appear to naturally take it in turns to ensure there is always an adult presence.  The play are adjoins a large communal block used by those not lucky enough to have an en-suite and electricity!  Undercover, there is a washing up area, 2 large fridges and a shower and toilet block.  All are very clean and indeed smell clean and fresh too.  There is a second toilet and shower area with laundrette on the site but I didn’t visit.

Local to Humble Bee Farm

There are 2 lovely walks signposted from the site.  It really does sit in the most beautiful area and sits in a dip, so you feel very isolated but also enjoy wonderful views when you do explore a little further on foot or bike.

There are numerous beaches, from the amusements on the pier to the quiet, isolated cove.  The owners will happily point you in the right direction depending on what you desire.  The local countryside is full of wonderful walks and there are numerous footpaths near the site and indeed for those with stronger legs I am told that the cycling locally was fantastic.

There are so many attractions locally; Whitby Abbey, Scarborough Sea Life Centre, Castle Howard, Burton Agnes Hall, Yorkshire Lavender, National Railway Museum, Seweby Hall, Animal House Birds of Prey and Owl Rescue Centre, Eden Camp Museum……you get the idea!

What’s So Special about Humble Bee Farm?

I can’t put my finger on it.  However there is something very special about Humble Bee Farm.  As soon as you get out of the car you start relaxing, there seems to be a calm over the site which means ‘family time’ begins straight away.  Never have we played so many board games without anyone falling out or have the children been so keen to simply sit with us and talk or read without mentioning the ipad even once!  It wasn’t just us though, all the parents we spoke to were either lamenting on the joyous time they were having with their children or smugly announcing that they’d been coming years so were aware of the secret of Humble Bee Farm long before us.

Perhaps because it was one of the first glamping sites the owners have somehow honed their hosting skills, they’ve realised what people need to have a good time there and they managed to service those needs effortlessly and with minimal interference.  So it is safe to say that Humble Bee Farm does deserve its legendary status due to its very own special blend of family magic.
