Drusillas Park Halloween Adventure

Halloween seems to to be rapidly consuming October half term. I hope that we won’t spend our entire week dressed up in ghoulish outfits and consuming excessive sugar, but Halloween will certainly feature heavily.

Last year we took the opportunity to grab some winter sun in Tenerife, where we actually experienced more rain than we had bargained for. This year we are planning an October stay-cation. This could have its advantages; last year my seven year old found it very hard to forgive me for being on a plane home on ‘trick-or-treat’ night. However, a stay-cation will take more planning. Sadly we won’t be losing any days lying around a pool watching the girls quarrel over inflatables this year… we will need a couple of exciting days out, time with friends and family we don’t get to see in term time, and lots of rest & relaxation. I will try not to get carried away… I have learnt from experience that it is possible to spend as much money on a stay-cation as abroad, and to send your children back to school more tired than when they finished for their ‘break’!

So, I will embrace Halloween and all the excitement it brings my 7, 5 and 2 year old daughters. We will carve pumpkins on a rainy day, having already picked them at our local pick-your-own farm. We will probably bake some ghost shaped biscuits and we will definitely spend a lot of time discussing  Halloween outfits. With Halloween itself being the first day back at school I am hoping will be able to bring forward the dressing up and sugar consumption to the half term.

We are going to use Halloween as an excuse to visit Drusillas Park in East Sussex for their half term ‘Shriek Week’. I have been hoping to take my animal-mad five year old for a long time, but with the addition of ‘Shriek Week’ I will also be able to satisfy my thrill-seeking seven year old. Drusilla’s comes very highly recommended by friends, and looking at the park map and huge list of activities I can see why. Drusillla Park’s is home to a wide range of animals, from anteaters to penguins,  but it also has lots of play areas, rides, and a ‘hello kitty secret garden’ that will delight my two year old. I am sure there will be something for everyone, or at least for every child… and I am pleased to see on the map lots of coffee shops for me. Half term also sees the addition haunted heights, hide-and-shriek, ghostly castles and mummy’s in the maze… that’s the Egyptian-type, not mothers hiding from their children in hope of a moment of peace and quiet during half term. Now all I have to decide is do we go on Wednesday so we can meet Scooby Doo…?
