As big fans of Horrible Histories, my three daughters (aged 11, 9 & 5) and I were delighted to being going to see the theatre production take to the River Thames.
We boarded the boat at Tower Bridge Quay, just the other side of Tower Bridge to the Tower of London. The seats are unreserved and the boat leaves punctually, so most people arrived a few minutes early. Seating is on the open deck of the boat upstairs – with five seats on each side of the aisle.
The show was based around two characters; a dynamic history teacher and her exuberant pupil, whose family seemed instrumental in London’s history. The boat departed the quay and headed west under Tower Bridge. As we moved along the Thames the teacher and her pupil highlighted all the sights and gave the audience a potted history of the most horrible bits. Starting with the dark history of Tower of London, where so many had been imprisoned from Anne Boleyn to the Kray twins. The historical facts came fast as we sailed past HMS Belfast, the first boat to fire in the D-Day landings. The Thames Tideaway construction site inspired a sewage related song which resulted in lots of giggling.
We continued our journey along the Thames as far as the Houses of Parliament, before we turned around. Both the children and I learnt something we didn’t know about London, as the historical stories came thick and fast, and the pupils’ family connections becomes even more fanciful. As we passed back under Tower Bridge for a second time and continued our journey east, we heard about his family connections with pirates and we returned to port with the audience singing ‘drunken sailor’.
The sailing was an action packed, enjoyable and informative 45 minutes long, which we would highly recommend. Daily sailings are at 11.45, 12.45, 13.45, 14.45, 15.45 and 16.45 booking now until end of October 2021, and maybe beyond. We managed to combine our trip with a visit to the Tower of London and travelled by Thames Clipper from Waterloo Station to enjoy the best of the lovely summer weather that day.
