Last weekend I was lucky enough to head off to a beautiful barn near Richmond with two very good friends Julia & Sarah. The barn was part of the accommodation on offer through Holiday at Home a family run holiday rental company, specialising in top quality holiday accommodation, in and around Richmond, North Yorkshire. They have cosy two bedroom holiday cottages, a wide choice of three bedroom log cabins with hot tubs, and for larger groups four or five bedroom country houses (which we stayed in). However what all the properties have in common is luxury and style.
The Barn we stayed in was called Shorthorn and was absolutely stunning. If you’d like to see few more photos I took, please do head over to this post I wrote earlier this week. Shorthorn is a 4 bedroom property and the adjoining Barn, Dexter is 5 bedroom. Whilst both have their own very separate gardens and we barely heard our neighbours all weekend, there is a gate that can be accessed to allow both properties to be used together for a large group weekend away. Definitely on the list for a group visit as it can be hard to find properties big enough to suit large groups, particularly those that will take dogs! Yes this property is even dog friendly too! Not that you would know it save for the dog basket in the utility room!
So what did we love about this property?
The location
It’s not far from the A1 and really close to a local pub, yet you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere with views like this:
They provide absolutely everything
Everything has been thought of and has been provided – absolutely everything! The only difficulty we had all weekend was where would said item be,in the enormous kitchen! We played a guessing game at times as to which of the many many drawers the garlic press might be in, or the grater etc.
We cooked a beautiful Riverford Organic Recipe Box meal one night (full review here) but I’m pretty sure you could have rustled up a Michelin starred dinner with all the pots, pans and accessories in that kitchen! Also things like matches and firelighters for the stoves were not just provide, but provided in a lovely little box marked ‘matches’ ‘firelighters’.
I very very geekily also got very excited about the ‘other stuff’ provided in the kitchen. If you are anything like me you always forget the basics when doing a holiday shop, and it pleased me greatly that the ‘cupboard under the sink’ had cling film, foil, washing up liquid etc etc. I got teased for taking a photo and would probably be teased more for publishing it – but I thought it was fab! There is a huge list on the inventory for each property (available before you go) if you want to check whether anything will be there!
Space
There is sooo much space. Space outside and space inside. The rooms are large and the beds are huge. There is not only a huge kitchen diner but there is a lounge plus an additional lounge space with a football table. It feel bright and airy and like you’d never run out of places to sit and chat.
Cosy
Cosy somehow feels like the wrong world when you’re describing something so large, but everywhere there was cushions and sofas and benches to sit. There was throws and duvets and rugs creating a sense of warmth and luxury. The wood burners would add to this feel in winter too – but on the day we visited the sun shone and the light shined in. It was the perfect house to snuggle up in with a cup of coffee (ideally in new pyjamas – these are Cyberjammies if you’re interested) and chat with friends.
Hot Tub
A place with a hot tub feels like the ultimate in luxury. After a lovely meal and one too many glasses of fizz, there is nothing better than getting into a hot tub on a chilly evening. Yes we took the fizz in with us too! Surely that’s a given.
If you can’t already tell we absolutely loved the house and are all plotting when we might be able to go back! If you want to visit do check out availability here – these properties are seriously cheaper than you would think! Why not head over to Julia & Sarah‘s blogs and fund out what they thought too!
NB: We received our stay at Shorthorn in exchange for an honest review.
Such a good weekend with you and Sarah, I agree the kitchen stuff was very thorough and you literally didn’t need to take a thing did you. Such a fab place x
I was just reading Julia’s post about your weekend so I had to pop over and see yours too. It looks like such a stylish and relaxing place to stay. You can’t beat a weekend away with girl friends. xx
Ha ha this made me smile. I got really excited when I found we had clingfilm in our last weekend let, too! Shorthorn looks beautiful – and it’s not far from our in-laws, so we’ll definitely consider staying there if they want to gather lots of family nearby. #MondayEscapes
So impressed with this property – it has everything and is stunning to look at.
It’s on my list now, along with the other Holiday at Home properties.

This looks so peaceful and beautiful, what a fun weekend <3
Oh this sounds delightful! I would love to go to stay in a not just beautiful, but luxurious holiday cottage in Yorkshire! And who knew that there was a Richmond in Yorkshire? When I first started reading this, I assumed initially it was in South West London!
Oh, this sounds like a lovely option for a weekend getaway. Desperately in need of some less hectic surroundings.. London is just so intense sometimes!
I can’t cook, but luckily for me my husband can, and gets really excited by a well equipped kitchen! I think he would be impressed with this one though! Looks like you had a fantastic girlie weekend away with lots of fun and giggles. #MondayEscapes
what a gorgeous and cozy setting! <3 so jealous haha. looks like you had an amazing time.
Such a lovely location and place to stay with the girls. And yes, it would have been rude not to take the bubbles to the hot tub 🙂 #MondayEscapes
This place looks perfect for a weekend getaway with the girls or a few couples. That kitchen is amazing and I am already dreaming of what I might cook in there!
Such a nice property (loved the photos) and great place to be. And you all look like you had a lot of fun 🙂
