Mamma Mia the Musical Review was the musical that we didn’t want to end. When it finally finished after the third standing ovation encore, my eleven year old daughter turned to me and said Mum can we come every night for the next week until the run finishes, I want to see it again and again. Everyone must go and see it.

To be honest I think I could leave the review there. That is my advice. If you can get tickets to Mamma Mia the Musical Review just go!

For my eleven year old Mamma Mia the Musical had to live up to Mamma Mia the film which has been watched at least ten times perhaps more. On the way to the show I was ‘told’ that in fact all the songs in both the film and the musical had been created by a group called Abba and that they hadn’t been created for the film itself – she clearly hadn’t realised I had danced the night away to Abba tunes well before Mamma Mia the musical was dreamt up and opened in London in 1999, and well before the film of the same name in 2008.

For those of you not in the same boat as us, and who haven’t watched the Mamma Mia story countless times, Mamma Mia the Musical created by Judy Craymer and writer Catherine Johnson, revolves around the wedding of 20-year-old Sophie played (on press night) by Phoebe Roberts who invites the three men who might be her father to attend her wedding in Greece where she lives with her mum Donna. It’s a story of love, friendship and identity, which is cleverly told through the songs of ABBA (which haven’t been written specifically for the show even if your eleven year old also thought they had!).

The set changes are limited, although good enough, but it’s the live music and the cast that make Mamma Mia the musical the worldwide phenomenon that it is.

In this its 23rd year, Sara Poyzer as mum Donna was incredible throughout and her performance of the Winner Takes it All, was, for me, the stand out hit of the whole show. It was quite simply emotionally perfect.

That’s not to say I didn’t rate the other actors. To be honest it was lovely to hear all the songs sang well, Pierce Brosnon may be easy on the eye in the film, but his voice is not spectacular, certainly not when compared to amazing musical performers like we saw last night.

There was hilarity from the chorus with some superb dancing in tight lycra wet suits, and the banter between bartender Pepper and Helen Anker as Tanya, along with Nicky Swift as Rosie and Phil Coritt as as Bill, was laugh out loud funny.
