What makes for a memorable UK staycation? It’s a fairly open ended question that isn’t it, but when you have kids, the answer is usually based on whether or not they had a good time. I’m not saying the weather doesn’t help. I think we might all be praying for a summer like 2018 again but with the right place to stay and the right things to do when you get there you can create a really memorable UK staycation with kids.
We’ve collaborated with Original Cottages putting this post together to bring to you some fabulous family friendly cottages, close to some brilliant beaches, farm parks and family friendly days out. There is usually a National Trust place close by with an adventure playground too!
Let us know when you’ve had a read which is your favourite and which one you are most likely to visit.
When I was searching through the website these five properties stood out to me.
Family Friendly Cottage near Scarborough
The first being Barmoor View near Scarborough.
The spa resort town of Scarborough is 3 miles away, yet the north bay with its sandy beach is only 2 miles. Here you will also find the new Alpamare water park, an aquatic sensation for all ages, and Scarborough Sea Life Centre. For those who like to get active, tennis courts, rugby club gym and squash courts are all just a mile away.
The reason it leaped out at me was the hot tub on the decking in that large garden. We’ve had some fabulous holidays where there has been a hot tub and nothing keeps the kids going on a long walk more than a hot tub reward at the end of the day it’s pure bliss.
Family Friendly Cottage in Mid wales and the Brecon Beacons
2 Derw Cottages also caught my eye. Just look at that garden. My kids would have the time of their lives running around that garden whatever the weather. In the sunshine I might enjoy it a little more that’s true but they never tire of a game of hide and seek in a garden like this. It would be completely and utterly memorable UK staycation in this property.
The fact that it’s close by to Snowdonia National Park helps too. There is soo much to do in Snowdonia these days, and not all related to walking. Check out our post on Things to do in Snowdonia here. Any of those would make for a memorable UK staycation. My particular favourite is surf snowdonia – yes that’s right you can surf in the middle of wales!
We have also visited Attingham Park in Shrewsbury whilst staying in mid – wales and its only 30 minutes from this property. They have a great playground and many special events on during the year too.

Family Friendly Cottage in Cornwall
Egret View!! Wow! How could I not include this. Just look at that boat in the living room!!
Egret View is a modern, fun, family home that will delight and amaze adults and children alike with features such as a slide leading down from the stylish bunk beds (I want that myself) and their very own sailing boat in the play area, where they can let their imagination roam free. There is a games room for all the family to enjoy, complete with an indoor climbing wall and games table in a comfy setting. It’s also only a short drive to Newquay and there are so many things to do in the vicinity for kids. There are beaches galore, Camel Creek Adventure Park and even closer Newquay Zoo. There are also 6 great National Trust properties to visit with kids in Cornwall too.
Family Friendly Cottage in Lake District
Another wow property is Cleabarrow Cottage, I could imagine us staying here with another family or maybe even three.
Memories are made in the Lake District and Cleabarrow Cottage is a truly magnificent property right in the heart of the Lake District National Park. Just a short drive away is Bowness-on-Windermere. We’ve enjoyed so many wonderful trips in this area including the steamer to Haverthwaite, Beatrix Potter museum, and even quarrying at Threlkeld Mining Museum.
Family Friendly Cottage in North Devon
4 Out Of The Blue an irresistible holiday choice. Positioned right on the waters edge, at high tide you can wake to the sound of the waves, and at low tide a multitude of rock pools are uncovered, perfect for young explorers. Devon is also home to the Tarka Trail which is inspired by Tarka the Otter, and runs for around 180 miles. You can however dip in and out of it and its perfect for cycling and scooting. Many of the sections are incredibly picturesque but Cathy at Mummy Travels recommends “the section between Braunton and Meeth, using the area’s old railway lines. There’s more than 30 miles of trail for cyclists to enjoy, although you’ll have to be lucky to spot an otter.”
