The summer is almost over and autumn is on its way. It’s the time of year for new school uniforms, new stationery and of course some fantastic new books to read so here are Mini Travellers Children’s Book Ideas for September 2018.

Picture Books

Pink Lion by Jane Porter (Walker Books)

Arnold has always been happy living with his flamenco family, that is until a pride of lions turns up and tells him he actually belongs with them. This is a sweet story about family, fitting in and standing up for yourself that has quickly become a firm favourite with my four year old.

The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle by David Litchfield (Lincon Children’s Books)

Fiddle playing Hector and his dog Hugo are best friends, but when Hector retires and Hugo is invited to tour the world playing his fiddle, it changes their relationship forever. Set in vibrant New Orleans this powerful story about friendship is the sequel to the global bestseller The Bear and the Piano.

Ten Little Robots by Mike Brownlow and Simon Rickerty (Orchard Books)

Join ten little robots as they set off on a hilarious adventure through a factory, and slowly disappear one by one. Written in rhyme with plenty of repetition, it’s great fun to read aloud and also has an emphasis on numbers. Both my two and four year old adore the books in this bestselling series.

5-8 years

Professor Astro Cat’s Space Rockets by Dr Dominic Walliman and Ben Newman (Flying Eye Books)

The latest title in the Professor Astro Cat series, this is a fantastic introduction to the world of space travel and the type of rockets used. With bright, bold artwork, this book has completely captivated my son and sparked a fascination with space.

 

Star Stories by Anita Ganer and Andy Wilx (Templar Publishing)

For thousands of years people have looked up at the stars and been inspired to tell epic stories of gods and goddesses, monsters and heroes. This beautifully illustrated book brings together a selection of some of these stories from around the world.

Isadora Moon Makes Winter Magic by Harriet Muncaster (Oxford University Press)

Isadora Moon is special – her mum is a fairy, her dad is a vampire and she’s a bit of both. Isadora loves playing in the snow, especially when her creations come to life but what will she do when she discovers snow magic can’t last forever? With striking black and pink artwork throughout, this gift edition is the latest book in this charming series.

8-12 years

Knights and Bikes by Gabrielle Kent and Rex Crowle (Knights Of)

Join Demelza and her best friend Nessa as they embark on an entertaining adventure to uncover the mysteries of the Penfurzy Knights. This is a fantastic, fast paced book and a really enjoyable read.

The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Andersen and Elisa Paganelli (Usborne Publishing)

Marinka is desperate to change her destiny and have a normal life, but her house has chicken legs and moves every few days. I was completely captivated by this magical story of Marinka, and her grandmother Baba Yaga who guides spirits between this world and the next.

 

Boy Underwater by Adam Baron (Harpercollins Children’s Books)

Cymbeline has never been swimming. Ever. When he goes to the pool for the first time he isn’t prepared for the sudden breakdown his mum has. Now Cymbeline must solve the mystery of why his mum never took him near water and what he discovers will change his life forever. This is a moving story about love and loss written with a dose of humour.

Young Adult

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (Macmillan Children’s Books)

Zelie remembers the night her life changed, the night her mother was murdered, the night when magic disappeared from her world, but she never imagined she would be the one to try and bring magic back. This is easily one of the most gripping books I’ve read this year. It’s an incredibly powerful, action packed debut and is already being developed into a film.

 

Orangeboy by Patrice Lawrence (Hodder Children’s Books)

Winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Readers, this is a gripping story exploring family loyalty, power struggles and the choices that define us. Marlon isn’t street, or cool, he’s the kid no one notices, that is until a girl dies right next to him and the mysterious Mr Orange seeks Marlon out.

 

Things a Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls (Andersen Press)

Set against a backdrop of women’s suffrage during the cusp of the First World War, Things A Bright Girl Can Do follows the lives of three teenage girls, from different classes and parts of London as they join the fight for women’s rights. With compelling characters and an engaging plot, this is a fantastic read.
