I Really Want To Win by Simon Philip & Lucia Gaggiotti (Templar Publishing)
The little girl in this story is desperate to win a medal and a trophy. But when events don’t quite go to plan, she finds herself learning an unexpected lesson.
With plenty of humour, a great message and lovely bright artwork, my 4 year old has really enjoyed reading this.
5-8 years
The Adventures of Harry Stevenson by Ali Pye (Simon & Schuster)

Lampie and Children of the Sea by Annet Schaap, translated by Laura Watkinson (Pushkin Children’s)
After disaster strikes one stormy night, Lampie the lighthouse keeper’s daughter is sent to work as a maid at the Admiral’s house. There are rumours a monster lives in the tower there, but what Lampie actually discovers changes the course of her life forever. With it’s fairy tale feel, cast of quirky characters and strong themes of friendship and celebrating differences, this is a brilliant read by a bestselling Dutch author.
The Lost Book of Adventure from the notebooks of the Unknown Adventurer by Teddy Keen (Frances Lincon Children’s Books)
This beautiful book is based on notebooks and sketchbooks discovered in a sealed metal container in the Amazon by outdoor enthusiast Teddy Keen. It contains 192 pages about everything you need to know to survive and thrive in the wild – from building shelters to tying knots. With it’s stunning artwork, this is perfect for inspiring a love of adventure and the great outdoors.
No Ballet Shoes In Syria by Catherine Bruton (Nosy Crow)
Eleven year old Aya, her mum, and baby brother arrive in the UK seeking asylum from war in Syria. When Aya stumbles across a ballet lesson, the teacher recognises her talent but she may not be allowed to remain in the country long enough to fulfil it. This is a beautiful, powerful story and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Young Adult
The Wickerlight by Mary Watson (Bloomsbury)
Two months after Laila was found dead on the village green, her sister Zara is determined to solve the riddle of why, and how, she died. But as she retraces Laila’s footsteps and starts to learn more about local folk law, she soon finds herself tangled up in an ancient feud. With the perfect blend of magic, mystery and romance, this is a compelling read.
‘I Will Not Be Erased’ Our Stories About Growing Up As People of Colour. Gal-dem. (Walker Books)
This is an insightful collection of 14 stories by women and non-binary people of colour talking honestly about their experiences growing up. Inspired by teenage diaries, letters and poems, each essay explores themes ranging from identity to friendship and activism. No matter the reader’s background, these stories help you realise that whatever you’re facing, you’re not alone.

Last summer Alys appeared and then vanished without a trace. This summer Cait is the new girl in town, another girl has been reported missing and Cait is desperate to uncover the truth about what happened to Alys. This is a gripping summer read perfect for the holidays.
Some books have been gifted by the Publishers but all views are my own.
