The National Trust have a list of 50 Things to do before you are 11 and 3/4.
Now our Mini Travellers still have quite a few years to go before they reach that milestone, but we started the list in 2014 and I have just updated it in February 2019. My plan is to update this blog page with pictures of when we have/do achieve them. Let’s see how quickly that happens!!

No1 Climb a Tree – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We have all had a go at this over the years!
No2 Roll down a really big hill – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Sadly I don’t actually have the photographic evidence but there was a lot of rolling down this hill when we spent the weekend at Timber Festival in 2018.
No3 Camp out in the Wild – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We’ve done a lot of camping but I don’t think it is true to say that we have done any wild camping. Not like We’re going on a Adventure Blog who really did do some wild camping with her three!
No4 Build a Den – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We had fabulous fun at Center Parcs building dens and having tea parties in them.
No5 Skim a Stone – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We do this on most beaches and I feel like I should have a photo but I don’t!
No6 Run around in the rain – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Always – no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes. Here we all are on our walk from Ilam Park to Dovedale Stepping Stones | National Trust
No7 Fly a Kite – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We love heading down to West Kirby beach nearby where we live and flying a kite. One of our favourites things to do.
No8 Catch a Fish with a Net – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We’ve tried a lot of this and are often very unsuccessful but it’s all about trying isn’t it! We got these fab fishing rods on our St Mawes Holiday in Cornwall.
No9 Eat an Apple Straight from a Tree – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
This is definitely still one to do!
No10 Play Conkers – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We have loads of these on the road and I feel like I should have a photo but I don’t!
No11 Go on a really long bike ride -50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Now I guess it depends on what you regard as long but for mine at the moment 8 miles is about the maximum but I think this is pretty good for little ones! We get the 5 bikes around with a combination of carriers from Thule.
No12 Make a Trail with Sticks – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
A challenge for the summer definitely.
No13 Make a mud pie – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Another on the list!
No14 Dam a Stream – – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
There are some challenges here for this Summer!
No15 Play in the Snow – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We did an awful lot of this when we visited Santa in Lapland in 2018.
No16 Make a Daisy Chain – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
A simple pleasure that we spent a lot of time doing in Wales a few years ago.
No17 Set up a Snail Race – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Now I’m not sure I even knew this was a thing! One for this Summer!
No 18 Create some Wild Art – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We absolutely loved the Gruffalo Trail at Delamere Forest and have been a few times. Once when we were there we made an owl out of sticks. Can you tell?
No19 Play Pooh Sticks – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We play this anytime we see a bridge now but we first experienced it, I think, at Lantern and Larks in Lancashire on a fab weekend break.
No20 Jump over Waves – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We had a great time jumping over waves in the sea at Abersoch, Nefyn and Black Rock Sands.
No21 Pick Blackberries growing in the wild

No22 Explore Inside a Tree
Still on the list!
No 23 Visit a Farm – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We do a lot of farm trips as the girls love a good farm. Nothing ticks this box more than our trip to Gwynfryn Farm the first week of September, but Reddish Vale Animal Park and Tam O’Shanters come in very close.
No24 Go on a walk barefoot
We must have done lots of this, definitely on the beach but I’m not sure how much of this we have done in the woods or in the fields! Must do more!
No25 Make a Grass Trumpet
Still on the list!
No26 Hunt for Fossils and Bones – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We don’t seem to have managed this ourselves so still on the list, but we do have some great tips from another writer about Fossil Hunting on Charmouth Beach.
Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre sits on the beach at Charmouth and has ample (and reasonably priced) parking close by (and a café below it!). The centre offers a small exhibition as well as advice and resources to support fossil hunting. It also offers the opportunity to sign up to a fossil hunting session run by resident Palaeontologist Phil.
No27 Go Stargazing – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We’ve loved this in a lot of places but one of the most special places we will probably ever remember star gazing is on Domwe Island in Malawi. No pictures of actual starts but you can imagine how clear it was!
No 28 Climb a Huge Hill – – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We climbed a huge hill (or a mountain according to them) when we visited Beeston Castle in Cheshire
No29 Explore a Cave – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Still on the list!
No30 Hold a Scary Beast – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Lots of scary beasts at a session whilst on holiday in Swansea Bay at Easter a few years ago.
No31 Hunt for Bugs – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Meet the Bugs at Farmer Teds in Ormskirk with also a chance to stroke a lizard, a snake and hold a frog!!!
No32 Find some Frog Spawn – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Helpfully and easily found regularly my neighbours pond!
No33 Catching a Falling Leaf – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Another of my favourite photos from a photoshoot behind our house but definitely catching a falling leaf!
No34 Track Wild Animals – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We’ve done this on Safari in both Rwanda and Malawi! Lucky girls.
No35 Discover what’s in a pond – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
I’m going to say that we haven’t done this enough and that it should still be on the list!
No36 Make a home for a wild animal – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We have bug houses in the back garden that the kids made if that counts!
No37 Check out the crazy creatures in a rock pool – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Again probably not well enough but check out No39 which I think was found in a rock pool
No38 Bring up a Butterfly – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We definitely haven’t done this so another to add to the list.
No 39 Catch a Crab – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We had an amazing day catching crabs on Black Rock Sands on the Llyn Peninsula.
No40 Go on a nature walk at night – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
A safari at night yes, but I don’t think we’ve done a nature walk.
No41 Plant it, Grow it, Eat it – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We have done this with a variety of things and failed miserably at all but herbs (which the girls don’t want to eat!)
No 42 Go Swimming in the Sea – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We swam in the sea on our summer holiday in Greece in 2014, enjoying the warm water, and have continued to do this every year since. One of our favourite things in the World.
No43 Build a Raft – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
I feel like there needs to be a trip designed around this task this year.
No44 Go Bird Watching – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Again this is something my girls have been lucky enough to do in Africa at Mvuu Camp and loved!
No45 Find a way with your map and compass – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
This isn’t one we’ve managed yet.
No 46 Try Rock Climbing – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
Aunty Katy and Uncle Jo are avid Rock Climbers and one day when they were down for the weekend, they took us all to the Climbing Wall in Liverpool. Two of the three girls loved it, and the eldest can’t wait to go back.
No47 Cook on a campfire – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
There has definitely been cooking on a campfire on many occasions but the photos are sadly few and far between! We will do more this year as evidence for the list!
No48 Learn to ride a horse – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
I don’t think my kids can say they can ride a horse but they have definitely tried!
No49 Find a geocache – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
We went through quite a phase of doing this and it’s definitely a great free activity.
No50 Canoe down a river – 50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4
When we visited Rwanda we took part in a fabulous family trip canoeing down the Mukungwa River with the kids.
