When you think of a day out with young children, you might not think a botanic garden would be high up your list of places to go, however you’d be wrong. Ness Gardens on the Wirral/Cheshire border is a brilliant place to take the kids and stretch their legs at all times of year.
Granted in complete driving rain the gardens might not be too much fun, but if it’s cold simply wrap up as you would for anywhere else and let them explore.
Ness Gardens is not a National Trust property it’s
We went to Ness Gardens over a weekend the Snowdrops were out and they had Family Snowdrop activities on. The activities consisted of a trail to follow ( loosely Narnia based) and snowdrop themed crafts in the community room mid way round the usual trail.
It was also the sort of day were it was fab to try out the kids new Berghaus coats from Blacks. It was a bit rainy, a bit sunny, a bit cold and a bit warm. You know the sort of day when you have no idea what to put on. These new jackets that my Mini Travellers have been sent to try out have fleeces zipped into the raincoat so they can be all things at once!
When we arrived it was pretty cold and raining so we just wrapped them up in the full coat (with fleece zipped in) and we set off. The colours and volume of flowers at Ness Gardens that day were just lovely, so perfect for me and my camera, but also fun for them to explore all the different plants and play hide and seek in the bushes!
By the time we got to the playground the sun had come out, a little bit anyway, so they disregarded the top layer and just played about in the fleece. Slight downside to these is that now someone has to carry the top layer – meaning me! Although doesn’t that happen whatever coat they are wearing when the weather changes!
There is usually cars for the kids to play on close to the playground too, but there was a sign up saying they were being renovated over winter much to the kids dismay.

Yes There are approximately 200 benches sited around the garden at regular intervals, along with picnic benches and deckchairs.

Family memberships for Ness Gardens starts at only £38 for the year so definitely something to look into if you’re local as it is a great place for the kids to let off some steam.
Definitely a place worth taking the kids.

We’ve had some lovely days out at botanic gardens – great when It’s hot (those rare occasions!) Love the sound of the Narnia trail too.
