On Saturday morning the girls and I were lucky enough to be invited to the first public performance of “One Little Word” by the brilliant M6 Theatre Company based in Rochdale before it heads out on a national tour.

The 45 minute play is written for 3 to 5 year olds but this reviewer for one was moved by this enchanting little play.  The M6 Theatre Company is one of the country’s leading companies specialising in delivering productions for young people and this performance shows exactly why.

Starting out as a funny take on the imaginative play of children the excellent performers lead us subtlely though a story about friendship, jealousy, conflict, and ultimately reconciliation (perhaps even love).  There is only one spoken word through out the entire performance, “I’m not going to tell you what it is though” and when it is delivered you could have heard a pin drop amongst the captivated audience of 3 and 4 year olds.

I am sure we have all watched children play together and are all to familiar with happy play turning into crying and shouting as someone doesn’t perform their part properly or snatches a toy that isn’t theirs.  “One Little Word” challenged the kids to sit on the sidelines for a change and simply watch rather dive in!  The show held my three girls attention (4yrs, 3yrs and 3 yrs) throughout and I am pleased to say wriggling and seat swapping was at a minimum!

When the girl on stage scrunched up the boys drawing and threw it away there were frowns from my three.  When she pushed him off the ladder there was sharp criticism and when she angrily slapped her new friend there were actually gasps followed by a hushed silence all round the theatre.   It was fascinating to see their reactions.

They loved every minute and were thrilled to bits to be able to meet the two performers at the end, eager to tell them it was a “brilliant show” and “we loved every minute”.

Of course as we got into the car on the way home there were the usual squabbles and bickering about who sat where and who stepped on who.  But hey!

  1. I love small scale theatre productions., I’ve seen a fair few over the years with my nephew and have always enjoyed them. There’s something so special about such an intimate setting. Glad you all enjoyed 🙂

  2. Oh I would have loved to have seen their reactions to what was going on, on stage! At what age do you think they start to recognise right from wrong? Must keep a look out for this production! Thank you so much for linking up to Sunday Stars. xxxx
