If I can give you one piece of advice this Summer when you’re flying it’s take a picnic!

Recently I was asked by the BBC to appear on the tele about the Hidden Costs of Travel this Summer. I did that and then I wrote a piece about it too!

The Soaring Costs stretching holiday makers’ budgets

However the chat on my facebook page and in my DM’s since I wrote the piece and appeared on the TV has been:

Can you really take a picnic on a flight?

Can you take food through security at the airport?

The answer to both those questions is yes. Yes you can take food through security, you can take a huge extra bag of food through security. You just can’t take drinks (or usually squeezy yoghurts).

Ever since the kids were small we’ve packed a huge picnic for the airport and the flight as I don’t know about yours but mine just want plain sandwiches (still do to be honest) and don’t want ham sandwiches with mayo on no matter how nice (Pret & Boots I’m looking at you).

However this year it’s even more important. We’ve been lucky enough to fly a few times this year already and each time we’ve received a message from the airline telling us there was unlikely to be any food on the flight to buy if you hadn’t pre-booked. They also couldn’t guarantee the pre-booked food!

Also please don’t rely on buying food at the airport. You might take ages to get through security meaning you have to go straight to your flight, or you might get through in time to find most of the restaurants and shops shut due to lack of staff and huge queues at those places open. Honestly it’s a thing. If all the flights are delayed this problem is even worse. Last time we flew the queue for all restaurants was 2 hours long and we only managed to get sandwiches from WH Smiths as I was standing in the right place when the delivery came in.

SO – if you’re flying this year with kids pack a picnic. If you’re flying this year without kids pack a picnic. I promise you won’t regret it!
