When you’re flying from a London airport such as Heathrow, it’s important to know the ins and outs of it – literally. The airplane hub is one of the busiest in the world. In fact, the massive 1,227 hectares of Heathrow saw close to 75 million passengers fly to and from the city in 2015. This means, London’s congested streets somewhat resemble its active runways and chockfull airports. With these things in mind, the problem of finding ample airport parking becomes a legitimate challenge for British travellers. A reputable parking aggregator in the UK categorizes car bays at Heathrow as standard (short and long stay), luxury (meet and greet and valet), business, and alternative (hotel with parking). Of course, you can always commute to the airport via the Tube, the Heathrow Express, or even the National Express Coaches; but these are more suited for couples and/or solo travellers.
An expert travel journalist gives an important piece of advice for families driving to the airport: book a parking space in advance. At Heathrow’s long stay carpark, for example, a one-week-stay could set you back £195 (£30 on your first day and £23.60 for every succeeding day). However, when you reserve a parking slot, the cost drops to a more reasonable £82. Typically, the best time to sign up for airport parking is at least 24 to 48 hours in advance.
