Peppa Pig – My First Concert – 4 stars, an engaging and fun-filled show for under 5s
Saturday morning, the first weekend of this year’s Edinburgh Festivals and we are on the train into town. After a long, two year break, Edinburgh is certainly feeling like a festival city again. Lots of smiley people, accents from all over the place and crowds of people wandering the streets – oh it’s great to be back.
We are heading to one of the most beautiful and striking venues in Edinburgh, set on the Mound, just down from the castle and overlooking Princes Street, sits Assembly Hall – a magical looking place steeped in history. Enough about history though, we are off to see Peppa Pig – woooo hoooo!
Larger than life sized Peppa, George, Mummy and Daddy Pig take to the stage to the delight of a busy, buzzy audience filled with little people.
Sarah, our host and conductor for the hour, organised the Pig family beautifully, before welcoming the members of the orchestra to the stage. She introduced each instrument and musician in a really clear and concise way, as well as explaining the different groupings of musical instruments.
Then it was time for some music, the selection was a brilliant first-timer showcase what an orchestra can do, with compositions from the Nutcracker, Beethoven’s 6th, Mozart and In the Hall of the Mountain King, as well as Peppa’s theme tune, The Grand Old Duke of York, Twinkle Little Star and the Muddy Puddle Song. It was pitched perfectly for little ones with catchy tunes and lots going on on-stage. We spotted every age group in the audience; the little one sitting with his mummy behind us, was just 3 months old, he seemed really taken with all the music and lights. Tots with siblings, parents and grandparents and they all seemed to be having a ball. Merle, who is nearly five, especially loved taking part in the action songs and singing along, it was a really joy-filled hour of fun and laughter and the perfect first concert for little ones.
