Find out why you should try Walker Art Gallery with the Kids!

Yesterday it rained and rained and rained. We had planned on a day out in the park but even my husband who is usually optimistic about getting out in the rain couldn’t bring himself to play outside.  I asked our eldest what she wanted to do and she said she wanted to go to the museum place where they could do a puppet show.  After a little bit of discussion we worked out that she meant the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool “The one where you can do gluing and sticking”.

Now a gallery isn’t necessarily an obvious place for kids to want to go on a rainy day out, but the Walker Art Gallery has a whole section just for kids. Big Art. It’s a fantastic room with books, dressing up clothes, games, sensory activities and of course the opportunity to get involved in some art.

Throughout the year they run activities in here on different days for pre-schoolers but at the weekend it’s just a free for all. So yesterday my three ran around very happily for a good couple of hours.  Entertaining hubby with the puppet show.

After the trip to the Walker Art Gallery hubby headed down to the library with the girls. This whole area of Liverpool has also received a revamp recently as the Liverpool City Library has been the subject of a £55 million refurbishment.   The building itself is worth a look (well if you like that sort of thing) but the children’s section is huge and great fun. The curved flat ramps that feed into the circular area designed for pushchairs and wheelchairs no doubt are also (ahem) great for toddlers to run up and down.  I’m not saying we particularly encourage this, but it certainly doesn’t feel like an area you have to be shhhhh in.  There are bean bags for lounging in, tables and chairs for the more studios and of course thousands of children’s books for 1 yr olds to teens.

They read a few books, ran up and down the ramps and generally went ‘Oooh’ at the huge ceilings. It certainly killed another hour!

It was then onto the World Museum. Now we can spend a full afternoon at the world museum, but today was just a quick call in to look at the new snakes exhibition which runs until mid February.  The whole museum is free, so it’s a staple on our winter days out list. The snake exhibit had lots and lots of info on all things snake with lots of cases with models in.  The real live snakes were in very small areas unfortunately and were difficult to tell apart from their inanimate neighbours.  There was a large snakes and ladders and interactive video game for toddlers but in the main I would say its better for 6+ year olds.
