We recently visited the Ravenglass Camping and Caravanning Club Site in our motorhome, with our three children (aged,7, 10 and 11) and our dog. We have been to the Lakes a lot but never as far west as Ravenglass – a small coastal village in a quiet and quite remote part of the Lakes. The site is just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Ravenglass village.
There are around 30 hard standing pitches for motorhomes and a few basic pods at Ravenglass Camping and Caravanning Club Site. The pitches are a very good size with large gaps between them. The site has good facilities including clean toilets and fantastic showers (including a family shower room) and there’s a small shop selling basics and gas canisters. There is a playground and football pitch very near to the site. The site managers were extremely welcoming and helpful – giving us lots of details of local cycleways and walking routes.
The site is perfectly located for walking and cycling. Soon after arriving we took off on our bikes to explore the area. Ravenglass is on the Hadrians Cycleway (route 72). We did a good 2 hour round route which followed the coast and headed back through quiet country lanes.
There are a huge number of walks that start from or very near to the site. We did a full day’s walk which started from the site, passing the old Roman baths and passing Muncaster Castle. We then headed up over Muncaster Fell (one of the Wainwrights) before ending up near the village of Eskdale. We then took the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (or La’al Ratty as it affectionately known) back to Ravenglass. The kids enjoyed the ride on the steam train (and not having to walk back!) and the scenery was absolutely stunning.
Next to the Railway Station in Ravenglass is the Ratty Arms which was very welcoming, dog friendly and we enjoyed a good meal there (with the biggest portions we’ve ever seen!). The pub is a short walk from the campsite and there are another couple of pubs within walking distance.
Muncaster Castle is a half hour walk from the campsite through lovely woods. It’s worth a visit – there’s a great kids’ playground in the grounds, an owl and birds of prey sanctuary (with regular bird shows) and beautiful grounds to explore.
We also had a day out at Wast Water which is definitely worth a visit. Just one note of caution – the roads from Ravenglass to Wast Water are quite narrow so have your wits about you if driving a big motorhome!
We visited the Ravenglass Camping and Caravanning Club Site for three nights in February and will definitely be back. If you want to find out more do take a look at the Ravenglass Camping and Caravanning Club Site club page.
