Last night my husband and I had a rare date to the theatre. I say rare because whilst I am lucky enough to go regularly, he doesn’t really enjoy the musicals and ballets that I love, so when I was given the opportunity to review Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap I thought it would be perfect for us.

Before I start, I have to tell you that at the end of the show we were sworn to secrecy so I am not going to give you any spoilers – after all who wants to see a murder mystery and know the culprit?

The stage is set as a 1950’s drawing room in a newly converted guest house. On the night in question a ravage snow storm is descending on the town making the guest house difficult to get to, but one by one all the guests manage to arrive. As they arrive their stories unfold with their background and the development of their characters. They realise there has been a murder nearby,
and a sergeant arrives to question the guests.

This is the point where as the audience you begin to question the characters and try to work out the plot. This is also the point where the guests realise that there is a murderer in their midst. Typical to Agatha Christie the characters are all quite different with potentially different motives which add to the intrigue. The characters were all played superbly well, demonstrated by the fact that the scene does not change so all the tension, humour and entertainment comes purely from the  actors on stage.

The show has been running for over 66 years which is testament to how well it is received. If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie or just love murder mysteries I’d encourage you to go and see it.

The Mousetrap is currently on at the Liverpool Empire Theatre until Saturday 1 June. For tickets click here: https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/the-mousetrap/liverpool-empire/
