Where to stay in Hamburg – A family stay at The Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany
I think it’s often tricky to decide where to stay when you head to a city for the weekend. We did Porto with kids in an Airbnb and stayed in a family friendly apartment in Lisbon, but what I loved about staying at the hotel Holiday Inn in Hamburg (Billwerder Neuer Deich) was the swimming pool we used both days when we had finished our day in the city.
Where is the The Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany?
The Holiday Inn Hamburg is a large hotel just out of the city centre, but easily accessible on the bus and walkable if you don’t have little legs with you. It’s a nice friendly welcoming hotel with a pool, a restaurants and a bar you can eat in too.
Although the hotel was a little bit out of the city centre, it would have taken 50 minutes to walk, it only took about 12 minutes on a bus and the bus was really easy to use particularly once we had downloaded this fantastic free app called Moovit: Public Transport Live. We stumbled across the app whilst trying to work out where to get the bus from and it was superb. I’d highly recommend downloading it.
On our way from the airport to the Holiday Inn Hamburg we decided to get a train into the main central station as we had free public transport included with our Hamburg Cards. We then we got a taxi from the station out to the Holiday Inn Hamburg for 13 Euros. After that we just used the bus to get around.
What are the rooms like at The Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany?
The Holiday Inn in Hamburg has a few different types of rooms and we were hosted in two inter-connecting rooms on the executive floor, floor 15. The second bedroom for the three girls had two single beds and a camp bed which there was plenty of room for. The views across the city from this floor were fantastic and you get a great feel for how the city is laid out. You actually get an even better view from the roof and the team at the Holiday Inn are hopeful that during next years refurbishment everyone will get a chance to head up there as they are hoping a bar of some sort will be part of the plans. Keep an eye out for those announcements if you like the sound of this.
The rooms themselves at The Holiday Inn Hamburg were bright, had really comfy beds and great showers, free soft drinks from the minibar and free Wi-Fi too.
The team at the Holiday Inn Hamburg had even left teddies out on the beds for the kids, and spa goodies for us which was a lovely treat.

What is the food like at The Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany?
The buffet breakfast had a huge variety of choice and my kids love nothing more than starting their day with a variety of different things, they were exceptionally pleased to find a machine that made scotch pancakes that they could use – you can see more about the hotel and the breakfast in particular on my Instagam stories from the time we spent there, including of course the pancake machine!
The food on the first night in the bar was a little uninspiring if I’m honest but the kids menu was cheap and cheerful and they were very happy with it. The beer was also very nice and the atmosphere in the bar was conducive to the kids being a little noisier and as a result I was very comfortable.
The food in the restaurant the second evening was however really good and I enjoyed my fish of the day very much. The kids were pleased they could have the children’s menu again if they wanted, but my eldest actually had the chicken off the buffet which she was delighted with.
The reason we chose to eat in the hotel both night was however due to the swimming pool. It was such a lovely treat to come back from a day’s sightseeing and for the kids and us to have some time in the pool before dinner. On the first night (after our 3am start) I think one of the twins practically feel asleep over her food having worn herself out so much wandering the streets of Hamburg, swimming and then staying up late!
Isn’t the sun setting from the panoramic pool glorious?
Is The Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany child friendly?
Yes the Holiday Inn Hamburg really is very family friendly, with great interconnecting rooms and plenty of space for families. We particularly loved the swimming pool which was great fun at the end of a long day. The pool was quiet on the two occasions we went although I’m not sure the couple of other people who visited at the same time as the seven of us would have agreed. The children’s menu being served in both restaurants is also great together with the impressive and child friendly buffet breakfast.
Would we recommend the Holiday Inn Hamburg Germany?
Yes we would mainly because a hotel with a pool in a city is always a hit but also because everyone we met there was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Interconnecting rooms, a pancake machine and a wonderful pool have really sold this hotel to me! It looks lovely and I wouldn’t mind compromising a little on location thanks to these facilities.
