On Wednesday 12th April 2017 me and my 4 year old little girl, Daisy, were lucky enough to be invited to the Dukes Theatre to watch the ballet performance of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.

Daisy is well aware of the story and loves baby bear’s porridge, chair and bed being just right! Daisy is a mischievous little girl with blonde curly locks and always on the lookout for adventure just like Goldilocks. I couldn’t wait to watch her enjoy this classic story come to life through ballet, music and theatre.

Prior to the performance an area had been set up with craft activities for the children. The activities were all linked to the story and the children had a great time making and playing together before the show.

The auditorium was small which was perfect in my opinion for the younger children. Less intimidating than a large theatre and perhaps therefore more intimate for the performance. There was in the corner of the theatre a very small orchestra (which took me by surprise) and I knew straight away that Daisy would love that element of the performance.

The story started with Goldilocks and her mother in the kitchen, straight away the music was light, upbeat and set the scene perfectly. Daisy straight away loved the dancers and commented on how beautiful Goldilocks was and how beautifully she danced.

Goldilocks was then tempted into adventure by a beautiful blue bird, who danced so beautifully and was lovely and bright on the stage. Daisy was clearly very excited by this part of the performance as she knew that they were on their way to meet the Bears. Obviously there was no narration throughout the entire performance but Daisy followed the story so well and with ease due to the theatrical performances displayed by the dancers.

The performance followed the story and the scene where Goldilocks tried the beds was super. Daisy loved this part and if she had been able to I’m sure she would have been jumping for joy. At one point she asked when the children would be able to dance on the stage!

Daisy narrated the story herself to me throughout the performance and with us attending a relaxed performance I didn’t stop her from whispering to me and in fact relished in her enjoyment. The show lasted 40 minutes which was a perfect length for the young children.

This production of a children’s classic was a perfect way to introduce my little one to the world of ballet. We both loved it and will certainly be looking out for the next performance!
