Our son is a devoted Batman fan.  At the tender age of 3 we already have multiple batman suits for every occasion and he is never without a cape, so you can imagine the excitement in our house when we learned of the new Lego Batman movie.  In celebration of the new movie, Legoland Manchester in the Trafford Centre is now running special themed batman events and activities from 10th February to 12th March, including a guest appearance by Lego Batman.  Of course, I arranged for us all to visit on its very first launch day of 10th February.

Our son has just turned 3, so this was our first visit to Legoland and it did not disappoint.

Booking online in advance represents the best value, under 3s go free and you can purchase a Merlin annual pass and gain entry to Alton Towers, Sea Life, Legoland Windsor and Tussauds to name a few.  We also gleaned from their website that the soft play area of Legoland Discovery Manchester was undergoing refurbishment, but that did not have any impact on our enjoyment, there were lots of activities and rides to occupy our curious crusader.

As our son is pre-school, we enjoyed a week day visit and it was a breeze to stroll around and spend as much time on the activities as our son wanted.  After first receiving our passes and the goodie bag (full of batman themed presents, treasure hunts and competition cards), we were offered a group photo opportunity.  You don’t have to do the photo, but we did and you can choose and pay for your photo on the way out.

We then entered Legoland and learned how lego was made.  The lego presenter was fun, enthusiastic, engaging, getting all the children involved and curious about how lego is produced.  This lasted a few minutes and the doors opened to legoland.  Our first ride was Kingdom Quest which we thoroughly enjoyed.  We were ushered into carriages and you sat in your moving train, laser guns at the ready, fighting off all the baddies to save the princess.  The carriage scores how many baddies you zap. Our 3-year-old was in awe, scoring 0 but my husband and I got quite competitive.

We then entered Miniland which was sheer brilliance.  Any teenager or adult lego enthusiast would be in heaven at the detail and creativity.  Cities and places modelled with such precision out of lego.  Each miniland model had something to engage you with activating music, model kinetics and rides. The horse race is a must.

After mini land, you enter the heart of legoland.  There is a spacious café area, toilets (I would recommend if you do have toddlers to attend the Trafford centre/Home toilets outside before you go in) lots of break out areas to just hit the bricks and immerse yourself in lego building.  The 4d cinema, model building areas, forest and merlin apprentice rides run off here too.  There is also an area dedicated to building racing lego cars and trucks to let loose on ramps. I’m a huge people watcher and it was just fascinating to see the love of lego in adults and children alike.

At this point, the tanoi announced the guest appearance of lego batman and we were off to meet him in Legoland bespoke designed bat cave and have our photo taken.  This was a highlight and a must for any batman fan.

After a bite to eat, we took on Merlin’s apprentice ride.  There are height and age restrictions on some of the rides, but our son loved the Merlin’s apprentice ride (it is a flying ride) we returned twice again.

I was really looking forward to the 4D Cinema and can imagine that if glasses were provided, which I assume are vital for the effects, it would have been amazing.  There was also a malfunction which meant the 15-minute film was cut short.  When we go back to Legoland, we will certainly re-visit for our 4d experience.

Legoland Discovery Manchester was perfect escapism with kids on any occasion but especially from the wintry manchester outdoors.

NB: Michelle and her son received complimentary passes to Legoland but all views and opinions are her own.
