My husband and I took our 3 children (9, 8 and 5) to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Stockport Plaza last night.  We didn’t go to the Plaza panto last year as the previous year was a bit disappointing.  We’re so glad we went this year though – we all thought it was fantastic!  We were shown to our seats in the stalls by very helpful volunteers, and given booster seats for the children so they had no problem seeing the show.

On the way to sit down, the girls bought the obligatory flashing light-up wands (which I was pleased to see had replaceable batteries so we can re-use them). Our seats were brilliant, only 7 or 8 rows from the front.  The sets were really imaginative and impressive, and the costumes were amazing.

The wicked stepmother especially looked amazing (and was a very convincing baddie – at one point both my girls were sitting on Ed’s knee with their faces buried in his jumper!). Nurse Glucose (played by Jimmy Corkhill from Brookside) was pretty good as the pantomime dame, although he could have done with hamming it up a bit more.  He had lots of costume changes, each one getting more elaborate until he came on wearing a tea table laid with cream buns and scones, with a teapot on his head.  The kids thought he was really funny (especially when the penny dropped that it was actually a man dressed as a woman).  The court jester, Muddles, was one of the stars of the show and he and Nurse Glucose made a good comedy duo with a few genuinely funny jokes (getting less funny the more Ed repeats them today).

There was an uproarious rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas, which involved 5 watering cans, 4 shiny pans, 3 welly boots, 2 smelly socks and a bra that can only hold 3 (and lots of running around in the audience and bumping into each other by the cast).  Snow White and Prince Charming were both very good singers, the songs were generally quite catchy and there were some good dance routines which my girls loved.  The show ticked all the boxes for a panto – lots of opportunities to shout ‘He’s behind you’, ‘Oh no he doesn’t’ and ‘Booooooo’, and Nurse Glucose and Muddles both got cream-pied. I’d say it’s suitable for any age – there were all ages from toddler to late teens to small groups of just adults, all having lots of festive fun.  A great night out!

There is still time to buy tickets as the show is on until Sunday 10th January 2016.

NB: We were given tickets to attend the pantomime, but all views and opinions are our own.
