On Saturday we were delighted to be invited to watch Peter Pan at the Storyhouse in Chester so what did we think of it?

It’s the third year that the Storyhouse has put on a Christmas production and it’s become something of a pre- Christmas tradition for us as a family. Last year we enjoyed the Wizard of Oz and the year before that the fabulous Secret Seven. It’s obviously become quite the tradition for lots of other people too, as it was packed to the rafters and lots of other dates have very limited availability so you’ll need to book quickly if you fancy it.

How much does it cost to see Peter Pan at the Storyhouse and when is it on?

Running from Tuesday 10 December 2019 – Sunday 12 January 2020 with tickets starting from £15 per person it’s a lovely family activity. There also isn’t a bad seat in the house, particularly as gallery seats give you a fabulous view of the actors flying in this production.

So what can you expect from Peter Pan at the Storyhouse this year?

Well for starters Peter Pan at the Storyhouse is not a pantomine, so not to be confused with the Peter Pan pantomime at the Liverpool Empire this year too.

It’s an update re-telling of the traditional book by JM Barrie which incorporates mobile phones, traffic jams, hashtags and a very sassy and strong Tinkerbell, although to be fair, save for the skimpy dress, I seem to recall Tinkerbell always being pretty tough in the Disney version.

The cast of 9, many of whom play multiple characters , are in the main exceptional. Carlie Enoch who played Tinkerbell was our stand out favourite, her lines and delivery were always perfect and brought a laugh. James Phoon as Peter Pan gave it everything he had and was the right side of cheeky wreckless Pan that we know and love.

The kids loved the human dog played by Charlie Gosling, although we all thought that the appearance of Tiger Lily was a bit of an unnecessary addition to the play. Granted she is a major part of the original story but it didn’t seem needed here.

The musicians being on stage, to the left and the right, gave the show a great feel, although honestly I wasn’t sure about the last number. I was hoping for a bit of a more upbeat celebratory song.

The audience participation moments were lovely as always with large balls being thrown around the audience at on point, and everyone being encouraged to tic tock and pretend to be croc, at another.

If there was a criticism it was that one of the kids didn’t think it was funny enough and wanted a few more belly laughs, The Secret Seven was apparently funnier (their memory is better than mine!).

But for me, and the kids, our favourite bit was the flying! It was a lovely addition to the show and to be up high in the gallery, and feel part of the flight made the show just that little bit extra special.

All in all we absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone. I simply LOVE the Storyhouse itself and at Christmas its just that extra bit special.

Who is Peter Pan at the Storyhouse suitable for?
