During our stay at the Tregurrian Camping and Caravanning Club Site we ventured out to Newquay to explore a fabulously unique attraction, Pirate’s Quest in Newquay.

Pirate’s Quest is an immersive walk-through experience where you are guided around some super 360 degree sets by a trio of talented and energetic actors who are dressed as pirates. They tell you many tales and facts from the Golden Age of Piracy in Cornwall back in the 18th century.

Pirate’s Quest experiences need to be booked, although you can turn up on the day and do this. It is housed in a large building which you enter via Reception at the front. There is no customer parking but there is a public pay and display car park close by. This does get very busy so I would personally advise to arrive early to ensure you get a spot.

After checking in with Reception you wait in a holding room while other guests assemble. Children are given a paper trail sheet which they can fill in as you go round the quest. I liked that there were three activities of varying difficulty and children can choose which, if any, they want to do. My eldest completed all three tasks during the course of the tour and was pleased to receive a couple of chocolate coins and a badge as a reward.

Once everyone in our timeslot was assembled the door shut and a portrait on the wall sprang to life and played a video introducing us to Pirate’s Quest. A second door then opened and we were shown into the passage ways that began the tour. I don’t want to give too much away as it would spoil the fun, but for the next 40 minutes or so we wandered through passageways and rooms led by an actor and we paused every now and then to have a look for coloured parrots, letters and the answers to questions on the children’s trail.

The theme of the tour for 2019 is Pirate Heroes where us, the guests, decide at the end of the tour who will be crowned as leader of the Republic of Pirates. Will it be Black Bart the Puritan Pirate, Anne Bonny the Princess of Piracy, Henry Every the Pirate King or the notorious Captain Blackbeard?Needless to say the tour did include caves, murky streets, pirate flags, a tavern, pirate punishments and treasure!

Part way round there is the option to go into the scary Davy Jones’s Locker. I went round this and it did make jump. The story was also a bit grizzly in this part so I was glad the children had the option of sitting that part out and meeting us further along the route.

We found the actors to be very friendly, enthusiastic and professional. Their dialogue was witty and interesting and held the attention of the children and adults alike throughout the tour. In total the whole experience lasted around an hour. At the end there is a fab gift shop that we thought was reasonably priced so we allowed our children to get a few souvenirs.

Top tip: Whilst we were staying in Cornwall we picked up some visitors guides from tourist information offices and discount vouchers for Pirate’s Quest can be found in many of them.

Our Verdict

Having been to Charlestown Harbour and Shipwreck museum earlier in our stay the children were already well into pirates. However, Pirates Quest far surpassed all of our expectations and all of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we also learned so much! We would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.
