From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic in Six the Musical to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a 75-minute (no interval) celebration of 21st century girl power. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red and my 3 girls ages 10,10 and 11 utterly LOVED it.

Since its early days as a student production in a 100-seat room at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Six the Musical has fast become a global musical phenomenon. As well as a pretty much sold out UK tour which is continuing into 2023 and a third royal residence in the West End, SIX the Musical currently has productions playing on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and at the Sydney Opera House prior to an Australian and New Zealand tour, with a major US tour coming soon.

The Queens in the UK tour of Six the Musical are played by Chloe Hart (Catherine of Aragon), Jennifer Caldwell (Anne Boleyn), Casey Al-Shaqsy (Jane Seymour), Aiesha Pease (Anna of Cleves), Jaina Brock-Patel (Katherine Howard) and Alana M Robinson (Catherine Parr). The cast are backed by the show’s all-female band, The Ladies in Waiting. With just 6 cast members (and the band) on stage throughout the Queens give it their all.

Without exception the Queens in Six the Musical were all fantastic with truly incredible costumes (how do they make them?) that we are still talking about now. At the start of the show you’re asked to decide which of the Queens were treated the most badly by Henry the 8th and which you’d vote for. This meant that throughout their solos my three kept a note of who was their favourite and why and we debated this on the way home listening to the soundtrack on Spotify. It’s not even been 24 hours since it finished and we’ve listened to it twice already. I’ll know all the words by the end of the week I’m sure.

Each of the Queens in Six the Musical seems to have a similar amount of time on stage while they sing ‘Herstory’ rather than perhaps the one we all know. We all loved the twist on the classic tales and the sass with which all of the stories are told, never too earnest, always silly and camp and fun. The songs are full of innuendo, some which my 10 and 11 year olds got, some like references to playing on his pipe at 13 they thankfully did not.

Izzy loved the German techno Anna of Cleves and the spectacular that was Haus of Holbein (search it on Tik Tok!)

Eve (the most sensitive of us all) enjoyed Jane Seymour’s slower and more emotional ‘Heart of Stone’.

Six the Musical has been compared to Hamilton with its historical backdrop and storytelling, and quick, fast modern songs. As Hamilton uber fans we agree, and this performance of Six the Musical has been placed firmly in the top 3 musicals my three have seen, joint second with last weeks Mama Mia according to Lily (age 11).

If you get the chance to buy tickets for Six the Musical then do. This is a story told exclusively by women, but most definitely not just for women as the young boy watching in front of me would definitely testify.
