We went to see ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other stories’ as a family of four; two adults, an autistic 5 year old and a 7 month old. The Hungry Caterpillar is a firm favourite in our house so we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to review!

The theatre (Epstein, Liverpool) is a nice size for family shows, not too big not too small.

The stage was simple, a nice white background with beautiful coloured lights and gentle music throughout.

And then there was the puppets…. they were immense! They were manned by three puppeteers who were also telling the stories, and they were beautiful. The way they moved was so clever and really helped the stories develop!

The stories were The Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, 10 Rubber Ducks and The Lonely Firefly. Each story brought the puppets to life, I particularly enjoyed 10 Rubber Ducks!

Considering my children have a considerable age difference between them they both thoroughly enjoyed it, I think the music and lighting attracted my daughter (7 months) and the stories appealed to my son (5 years).

It was a real pleasure to take them, with all the kids (and parents) getting involved and excited by what they might see next!

The time and effort put into the puppets was certainly be appreciated, and considering it was a 4 person team (1 was behind the scenes) it was without a doubt impressive!

Highly recommended and I’m hoping they return to Liverpool as I’d definitely like to see them again!
