I can thoroughly recommend Thomas the Tank Engine at Llangollen Railway.

From the minute he heard the peep of the engines and spotted steam puffing into the clouds, my 3 year old was jumping up and down with excitement along the platform.
There’s a “Thomas” train which goes up and down Llangollen station platform all day – so anytime you arrive there’s a train you can hop onto. Thomas races Diesel along the platform and there’s a few different carriages you can ride on.
There’s also a big steam train every hour which does a longer trip to Corwen (about 40 minute journey each way). At the penultimate stop (Carrog) you can get off and watch a short puppet show.
In world where it seems little ones are obsessed with mobiles, iPads and tablets it was lovely to watch children belly-laughing at a good old-fashioned puppet show! Definitely worth hopping off for 15 minutes then catching the next Thomas the Tank Engine back to Llangollen.

We took a packed lunch and plenty of snacks which was a good distraction on the train journey.
Upstairs at Llangollen station, there’s an imagination/craft area with face-painting. My eldest wasn’t too fussed about that bit but other kids seemed to be enjoying it.
I’m pretty sure me and Grandma were more excited about meeting the Fat Controller than the kids but it was a nice touch to have him on the platform.

The beautiful Welsh town of Llangollen was a stunning backdrop. It was like stepping into a postcard- the fact we had a rare day of spring sunshine definitely helped!
It was classic old-school kids’ entertainment which parents and grandparents will enjoy too. All in all, a lovely day out. Thanks Thomas! Peep peep!
