We were kindly invited by Mini Travellers to attend the opening evening of Roald Dahl’s Gloriumptious Christmas at Tatton Park on Friday, with a visit to the Mansion and to see the arrival of Father Christmas in the Lantern Parade. My youngest, Daniel, age 7 and his best friend Lucas were really looking forward to it as they are both huge Roald Dahl fans!

We arrived straight from school and were lucky enough to almost have the mansion to ourselves. As soon as we stepped through the front door we were in the magical world of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, decorated in purple & gold, complete with huge lollipops and candy canes. Each of the rooms in the Mansion is dedicated to one of Roald Dahl’s stories, all beautifully decorated, with characters from the books & traditional Christmas decorations.

We started in The Witches drawing room where we could see their bubbling cauldron, broomstick tree and trick mirror. Christmas carols and words accompany you throughout your visit.

Fantastic Mr Fox and his friends were all sat down to a huge feast in a beautifully decorated dining room, we could have been in a woodland rather than a stately room! We spent ages spotting all the different animals around the table and counting the Christmas puddings.

A Christmas tree made of books greets you in the library where we met Matilda. We had time to sit and look at all the Roald Dahl books they have available as well as making some Christmas paper-chains.

There were huge gasps from the boys as we stepped into the room with The BFG wearing his Christmas hat, as he towered over us all. They were both able to write their Christmas Dream on a card and add it to the Dream Jar too, a lovely touch.

Next we entered the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory filled with sweet treats and a carousel of goodies. They both loved walking through here & imagining they were actually there. It really fired their imaginations.

We also found The Twits – they both found it hilarious to be Muggle-Wump’s.

We spent ages talking about the visit and which was their favourite room – a very difficult decision!   All in all they decided it was all ‘awesome’ and they really felt like they were in the Roald Dahl stories.

Each room is a feast for the eyes with so many glorious things to spot from the world of Roald Dahl, including a Christmas elf in each room. There is plenty to keep the children enchanted and entertained.

The evening ended perfectly as we joined the crowds of people with their lanterns lighting the way to welcome Father Christmas, his reindeer & elves to Tatton Park.

With Christmas and Roald Dahl rolled into one, a visit to the Gloriumptious Christmas Mansion is bound to keep both adults and children alike enchanted and get everyone into the festive spirit!
