Room on the Broom on stage is based on a British children’s story book by writer and playwright Julia Donaldson, which tells the story of a kind witch and her cat. The witch and her cat are travelling on their broomstick when they pick up some hitch-hikers – a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and a frantic frog. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – it snaps in two… just as the hungry dragon appears!
Will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?
It’s difficult to imagine how to interpret Julia Donaldson’s books for stage. If you know any of her books you will likely know them word for word. We’ve been fans since our son was born and he’s now 5, so they have featured heavily in our lives!
Room on the Broom was adapted for the stage by Tall Stories Theatre Company in 2008, and has toured around the United Kingdom and the rest of the world since then. It is currently touring at The Lyric, Shaftesbury Avenue, until September 2022 but don’t worry if you are not London based as the tour is going national after this and is on into 2023.
It’s been 5 years since I was in a West End theatre and it feels good! Everyone is excited and for many children in the audience it is their first experience of the West End because of the pandemic including our children (Dylan aged 5 and Cecilia nearly 1).
From the opening sequence we were taken to a camping trip and we were living it. The cast were excellent, puppetry enchanting & songs, very fun and engaging. The whole show was only an hour but a great amount of time for the mixed aged audience. The show has been written to engage the young but also be amusing to mums, dads and carers. The director has also been clever with the use of space and props and this works well throughout the performance. It’s great having a mixed media theatrical performance with acting and puppetry. My son particularly liked the frog puppet with his fun songs and the dog was incredibly realistic in his mannerisms.
After the show we were treated to a tea party and meet and greet with the cast and puppets which we loved!
We would recommend Room on the Broom on Stage, as a fun filled theatrical experience to families, particularly up to age 6. A great thing to do over the summer and getting little ones into live theatre. As it’s on in such a central location it’s also easy to plan a day around the performance, as we did.
