On Wednesday I took 4 very excited little girls to see Room on the Broom – The Live Show in Liverpool, being a Julia Donaldson book, and one of our absolute favourite books at that, we had high hopes. We had also been to see What the Ladybird Heard last year and loved that so we knew our favourite books could be turned into a theatre show with something for everyone. We were not disappointed.
The format of the show was perfect. Just an hour, no interval, and a cast that understood their audience. They came on stage a good ten minutes before the show actually started to entertain the troops. That is definitely a production understanding the make up of its audience and how kids enthusiasm can be lost if they are not (constantly) entertained. Thank you for this production crew!
The lights went down and from that moment until it ended an hour later, the four children all under 5, watched avidly. This is the first time all 3 of mine have done that. They giggled (so did I) they laughed (so did I) and they were scared briefly when the dragon came (but with a funny welsh accent you couldn’t be scared of him for long). They sang a long to the little songs and they embraced the lady dressed as a cat, and the puppets of the dog, bird and frog. The frog was brilliant! We it finished, one of my three year olds sobbed, and through her tears was saying ‘please come back Room on the Broom’. We had to go to the stage and say ‘bye bye Room on the Broom’ we must have looked a little nuts saying ‘bye bye’ to a stage.
The role of the Witch was played by Yvette Clutterbuck and she was excellent. Her wit kept us grown ups amused, and the faces she pulled kept the kids laughing along. As the story of Room on the Broom is actually quite short, the production included songs, extra conversations and little dances to make it last the hour. I don’t usually say this about a production for children but we really didn’t want it to end.
We didn’t take any pictures of the actual show as they usually don’t like you taking them in the theatre, so we have pinched one off the website. We hope you don’t mind Live Show.
The Live Show is on well into next year so check the website out for dates. We didn’t receive tickets for this production, we paid to go along, and we have reviewed because we LOVED it. So book your tickets today!

Great review, as you know my little boy went with my parents and he loved it! He wore a cat mask for the occasion and I know a few girls who went dressed as witches. I saw the Gruffalo’s Child a few years back and that was fantastic too. Thanks for linking up fellow host of #sundaystars

That sounds fantastic. I loved taking my kids to the theater for the 1st time last yr. Room on the broom would be perfect to see, as the kids love it. It sounds like your kids (and you) had a great time.
