Yesterday we went to the Floral Pavilion to see the 5pm showing of Sleeping Beauty.  We combined the trip with a very blustery cycle along the front in New Brighton and an early tea at Pizza Express. We had a really lovely afternoon and early evening and can highly recommend it to anyone looking for something to do before the Christmas Holidays finish.

The cast of Sleeping Beauty were enthusiastic to say the least, particularly impressive given they had only just finished the 1pm showing and have been putting on the show since mid December.  The star of the show for me was Silly Billy (Adam Moss) he was funny, kept the audience lively with jokes for young and old and was kind yet funny with his volunteers on stage towards the end of the show.

We had seen a panto at the Epstein Theatre the day before which was much more of a story than this version of Sleeping Beauty.  Thinking back to my childhood the production of Sleeping Beauty at the Floral was an a typical panto being a series of sketches loosely based around the tale of Sleeping Beauty and my three girls aged 5,4 and 4 all loved it.

Former Corrie actress Vicky Entwistle is the headline name, a vision in green and as the wicked fairy Carabosse who hates children she casts a deadly spell on the baby Princess Rose.  For me she was the perfect ‘baddy’ as she wasn’t too scary but the children all soon got the hang of having to boo her when she came on.

The good fairy (also a soap star Sarah Jane Buckley) flies a lot which the girls loved and sings perfectly well enough for panto.  Her moments on stage were fab and the girls cheered when they saw her.

The production quality of the panto was excellent and the set changes quick and seamless. The CGI visuals and the music choice was excellent and the cast worked brilliantly together, with witty exchanges and daily changes in dance routines to keep them all on their toes.

I felt it went on a slightly too long in the second Act, with an element of padding, but the girls didn’t think that, they danced in the aisles at any available opportunity and loved dancing along with Silly Billy and dancing to the ‘tunes’ at the wedding.

For me and mine it was the perfect pantomime.  Grab a ticket here if you still can!

NB: We attended the pantomime as guests of the Floral Pavilion but all views are our own.
