Like many families, we are missing our annual Christmas trips to the theatre. Theatres and the entertainment sector have been hit hard during COVID 19 and it has been interesting to see how creative approaches have been taken to continue to keep theatre alive.
The Snow Queen: An Online, Storytelling Adventure, by Iris Theatre takes families on a journey via Zoom from the comfort of their own home. The use of Zoom is mixed with brand new technology from Loom.ai, which allows for a live performance with interactive 3D avatars for a fun filled, festive storytelling adventure. Families can also download a free activity pack filled with games and craft ideas based on the show.
The audience are led through the story through the character Holly who needs some help along the way…from opening the book in the first place, helping set the scene and joining in with the actions of the characters, the audience helps re-live the story with the reassurance that ‘a story is food for the mind and the heart, we’ll know more at the end than we did at the start…’
After a slightly delayed start, we were launched into the story with the help of the avatars – both children (aged 5 and 10) were really intrigued by these and it was a great way to engage the audience with something a little bit different.
The story progressed (the performance took around an hour) and encouraged participation through lots of different activities to help move the story along. The actors could see the audience and so there were several references to the families watching – our children loved this personalisation and it helped keep them engaged in the performance too.
The story followed the traditional tale of the Snow Queen with lots of interaction and some variations or story and character to keep the story fresh – our children loved the Raven the best and were intrigued as to how the avatars had been created and voiced!
We really enjoyed a chance to experience something different during a time when we would normally have headed to the theatre for a festive panto or story and found that although it was a little strange to watch something over Zoom instead of at the theatre itself, the performance really engaged our 5 year old throughout. A great way to pass the time on a rainy afternoon and experience something a little bit different.
