On Monday night we were invited to the opening of the Storybarn’s latest adventure, Treasure Island at Liverpool One. Created in conjunction with The Reader (a volunteer-led movement across the North West), and alongside Liverpool One’s Story Season (a three month celebration of all things literary), Treasure Island is located on Paradise Street within the shopping area.
Unlike previous years when there has been a structure built for the purpose, this year it is within a shop unit which makes it withstand the elements. Upon entering you are whisked off to a far-flung place…
The staff are all dressed as pirates and help get you into character as soon as your arrive. They take you through the pirate ship, where you can enter the Captains quarters to find treasure, out into the sea avoiding the sharks and through the beautiful coral. Beyond which you’ll find the ball pool with various creatures and round the corner … you’re very own sandy cove aka a sandpit to play in. All around there are ‘rock’ cushions and books scattered to either encourage you to read with your child or let them to grab a book themselves. You are invited to have a play, and with the help of the dressing up box, create your own pirate adventure. The team read stories and encourage interaction in creating a unique adventure, and are all so enthusiastic I challenge anyone not to get involved. Upstairs you’ll find more areas for reading and a craft area to make a treasure map, or pirate hat … use your imagination and have fun!
The sessions last 45 minutes and are good value at £4.50, with the additional access to the crafting cove. There’s a great little gift shop too with plenty of pirate goodies for your little one to keep the adventure going once they get home.
The area has been created brilliantly, lots of little detail and certainly enough to keep the little ones entertained. The experience is aimed up to age 10, I went with my two boys aged 5 and 7 and they loved it. Freddie, aged 7 thought “it was amazing!” and we enjoyed it so much we are going back on Friday with some other friends … I can’t give you a better recommendation than that!
