Hello my name is Daniel. I’m 10 and I’m really interested in Ancient Greece and this year (2020) I went to Athens for my 10th birthday present. These are the best things you can do (in my opinion).
10. The Athens War Museum
The Athens War Museum has lots of information about modern and ancient Greek wars. It has lots of full-size weapons for you to look at.
9. Syntagma Square and the changing of the guard ceremony
Syntagma Square is the location of the Greek parliament building and where the changing of the guard ceremony takes place
8. Athens open bus tour
While this isn’t an actual location it’s a tour bus which has a commentary about the sights of Athens so you learn stuff while you travel around to get to the sights.
7. Temple of Zeus
There isn’t very much to see so that’s why it’s not high on my list but it is amazing how big the ancient Greeks made it, its enormous.
6. Lycabettus Hill
Lycabettus Hill is the tallest hill in Athens its 270 meters high and has a funicular railway inside the hill going all the way to the top and you can get amazing views of Athens from the top.
5. Tavernas
Greece has some really nice tavernas. My favourite one that is really nice is called Pame Tsipouro Pame Kafeneio. I really recommend going there as the food is excellent and the waiters are really friendly. https://www.pame-tsipouro-pame-kafeneio.gr/
4. Delphi
I know this technically isn’t in Athens but taking a day trip to somewhere else is really fun some places you can go are Delphi, Sparta, Olympia, and the Corinth canal plus some other places. The Ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the centre of the world.
3. The Ancient Agora
The ancient agora was a meeting place with lots of temples. It was like the town centre and the Ancient Agora includes the most preserved Greek temple in the world (the Temple of Hephaestus). It’s seriously impressive how little the temple is broken.
2. The Panathenaic Stadium
The Panathenaic stadium is where the first modern Olympics where held if you go there you don’t see the original as that was stolen by looters, but it was repaired.
1.The Acropolis and the Parthenon
The Acropolis is probably the most famous landmark in Greece. On the Acropolis there are lots of things to see mainly the Parthenon but others include the Erecthion, the Odium of Herodes Atticus, and the Propylaea. Nearby there is also the Acropolis Museum.
Hi Daniel. Great post. We are planning to go to Athens if the virus is going away. This city is a must see for all travellers to Greece. You simply can’t miss it if you are in the area. Acropolis and the Parthenon you’re right, are the best to see. For anyone interested to go to Athens or anywhere else in Greece, we can certainly help with a holiday of a lifetime. And families are our favorites.
