Llandudno, a Victorian seaside town located on the Creuddyn Peninsula in Conwy County Borough, Wales, is a perfect holiday destination for families with children. As the largest seaside resort in the country and home to two of Wales’s prettiest beaches, there are so many things to do in Llandudno with Kids, which this article will dive into.

1. Great Orme Tramway

Open from March to November, the Great Orme Tramway, which is the last remaining cable-operated street tramway in Britain, takes over 200,000 passengers from Llandudno Victoria Station to just below the summit of the Great Orme each year. Ticket prices vary, but a family return will cost £33 or £9 for a child return. Not only is taking the ride an exciting experience and the view once you get to the top is spectacular, but there are plenty of activities to do at the Great Orme too. From exploring the wildlife to mini golf, there is something for everyone.

2. The Beaches

There are two beaches in Llandudno, North Shore and West Shore, the former being the busier and the latter known as the quieter choice. North Shore Beach, also known as Llandudno Beach, is sheltered, boasts a Victorian pier and wide promenade. On the pier, you may find Punch and Judy shows, ice cream stalls and live music, whilst at the east end of the prom there is a play area, paddling pool and snacks. West Shore is a sandy beach which is said to be great for kite-flyers and kite-surfers, there is a café on this beach and is known to be a lovely spot to watch the sunset.

3. Llandudno Chocolate Experience

If you’re a family full of sweet tooths, this may be the perfect activity to do during a cloudy day. The Chocolate Experience lets you explore the history of chocolate with a video-guided tour, a chance to watch a chocolatier at work, an exhibition of chocolate wrappers from the past and the best thing- chocolate samples along the way! The experience is open Tuesday to Saturdays from 10am till 4:30pm with a family ticket (2 adults and 2 kids) costing £19.99.

4. Sightseeing Hop on Hop off Tour

What better way to explore Llandudno than on a Hop on Hop Off Bus Tour which takes you to all the most renowned spots in the seaside resort. The tour runs from March to October, between the hours of 10am and 5pm (4pm before April 8th), and covers 13 spots, including the Pier, Rose Hill Street, Deganwy Station and Town Ditch Road. The bus features an audio guide in English and there are two routes to choose from, the red and the blue. What’s also great is that your ticket is valid for up to 24 hours.

5. Home Front Experience

Perhaps more suited to older rather than little children or toddlers, on New Street you will find this living history museum which encompasses the sights, sounds and smells of life during World War 2. The experience includes shops mirroring those of the time, room displays, tableaux and period music sing alongs, inviting you to reminisce in nostalgia and take a trip into the life of civilians in 1940s Britain. The museum is open Monday to Saturday and even has a gift shop where you are able to buy presents and souvenirs.

6. Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza

Sadly due to Covid-19, this event has been on hold the last couple of years, but luckily it’s making its return in 2022. Established more than 30 years ago, the Victorian Extravaganza is free to attend and takes place over the May bank holiday weekend, which this year runs from the 30th April to the 2nd May. The event takes place between 10am and 5pm and boasts a daily parade (across the prom, Madoc Street and Gloddaeth Street), funfair attractions and food and drink stalls- you don’t want to miss it!

7. Bonkerz Fun Centre

Boasting fabulous soft play facilities and a unique Medieval Castle themed environment, whilst also providing parents or guardians with comfortable seating and a café, Bonkerz is such a fun place to take the family. There is a toddler zone for children under 3, which includes an interactive touch screen, slides, viewing pod and ball vacuum, and then the main play area which is suitable for children, and even the adults! Within the main play area there is a mirror maze, astro turf sports zone, air cannons and giant slides.

8. Venue Cymru

Built in 1994, and originally known as the ‘North Wales Theatre, Arena and Conference Centre’, Venue Cymru is located near the centre of the promenade on Penrhyn Crescent and hosts a variety of entertainment such as opera, pantomimes, musical theatre productions and orchestral concerts. This summer the venue looks forward to putting on the likes of Footloose, ZOG and The Flying Doctors and Dreamgirls.

9. Great Orme Copper Mine

These mines were uncovered in 1987 and date back to the Bronze Age over 4,000 years ago, and have been explored each year by mining engineers, cavers and archaeologists who have found more tunnels and areas of landscape to reveal more of the spectacular mines. The tour is self-guided and takes around 45 minutes, it is approximately 200 metres and includes climbing 35 steps down and back up again. If you’re looking for something exciting and educational to do this may be up your street, and you’re even allowed to take your dogs in!

10.  Angel Bay

If you are interested in getting up close to nature and, if you’re lucky, spotting some seals and maybe even their pups, then Angel Bay is your best bet. Angel Bay can be found between Llandudno and Rhos on Sea, and attracts visitors from all over. Apparently, the pupping season for grey seals is normally around September to October so that may be the ideal time to go, however visitors have been known to spot them all year round.
